About 2000 salaried workers at the Hershey Chocolate Company received notices that 5 percent of their yearly compensation would be paid as a bonus. The checks arrive during Christmas, with workers planning uses from paying debts to buying Liberty Bonds and savings.
Lancaster architect C Emlin Urban submits first plans for 100 Hershey homes to be built by M S Hershey. Five home types will use stone brick cement or frame and emphasize attractiveness practicality and low cost. Construction to start soon with owner-employee homeownership in mind.
More than 100 families seek to locate in Hershey this spring and have homes erected along the boulevard to the Industrial School between Areba Street and Caracas Avenue and up Areba Street before winter.
Ralph Fiore reports suspected theft by Guilio Desiderio at Hershey Chocolate Company. About 40 pounds of chocolate and other valuables were found in Desiderio’s possession. Squire Miller sets bail at about 250 dollars as authorities consider a wider wholesale sale operation alleged to be run by Desiderio.
The Hershey Red Cross reports the latest allotment finished on time including 50 Children's Dresses 60 Kit Bags 60 House Wives 25 House Dresses 10 Capes for Layettes. January knitting totals: 57 Sweaters 125 Pairs Socks 7 Scarfs 41 Pairs Wristlets 1 Refugee Shawl. Mrs E M Hershey leads the department praised for effort and sacrifice. The Hershey Junior Red Cross sent six convalescent robes and one shawl through Mr C E Peters. The community is poised to begin work for the new Hershey Hospital.
The February lineup includes Alice Joyce in To the Highest Bidder with Walter McGrail, plus The Roustabout and Katzenjammer Kids comedy. Albert E Smith presents Over the Top with Sergt. Arthur Guy Empey supported by Lois Meredith and Jas. Morrison, followed by When a Woman Sins with Theda Bara. Also a Katzenjammer Kids reel and a rescue comedy are shown. A separate note recalls a Hershey basketball thriller where Russel Clark seals a late game winner for the Olivers.
The Hershey Men's Club gym hosts a rotating schedule with many groups. Monday saw forty five men practicing on the floor while Tuesday's action featured the Hershey Big Five defeating Harrisburg’s Commonwealth team.
The Hershey Olivets edged Puget Sound Five 34 to 32 in one of the fastest games of the year at the Men's Club.
The Hershey Big Five beat the Commonwealth Harrisburg team 47 to 20 at the Men's Club. It was the Big Five’s first victory as they aim to build a winning streak. Smith led the locals with 21 points on 30 free throws. Fields starred for the visitors as Central High’s gem contributed best for Harrisburg. The Big Five face Reading Olivers on Friday night.
Fred Clark resigns as Hershey's longtime referee after a season of officiating all games. Visiting teams praised his fair calls, and editors deem him the best among Hershey referees. Continued on page 2.
Secretary Glass announces the Fifth Victory Liberty Loan will be the final big drive. The government to float about 5 to 6 billion dollars in late April with potential rates above 4.25 percent and a possible special inducement. The appeal emphasizes it as the last chance for the ordinary public to buy Liberty Bonds.
