Preparations underway at the Hershey post office to offer free home delivery starting February 1. The Derry Church post office will close that date and its residents will receive mail from Hershey by carrier. Two daily deliveries planned. carrier name not yet announced. New desks and furniture are being installed.
The Christmas Fund started by Hershey Trust Company has paid out over $17,000 since inception. More than 650 depositors participated. The 1918 Christmas Club is open with weekly dues of 25c 50c 1.00 and 2.00.
The Hershey Transit Company expands milk transport to three 12 ton cars due to rising volumes. Cars run from Elizabethtown to Mt. Joy over the Conestoga system with Mt. Joy and Florin as key origins and have operated long hours amid passenger train reductions increasing overall traffic.
C E Cassel and W A Hershey of Hershey and S T Witmer of Union Deposit attended Farmers Week at State College with over 600 farmers from across the state. Dauphin county ranked eighth by farmer numbers but first in the percentage of farms represented, reflecting well on the county.
The Hershey Press resumes weekly publication on September 30 1909 as an eight page issue. It will be issued every Thursday and distributed free through the Hershey Department Store. The publishers believe local readers will welcome the return and cooperate to keep the paper active.
The Pennsylvania State College begins a series of educational meetings on food and clothing at Hershey High School. Sessions include discussions and demonstrations of food values and clothing values, led by Miss Mary Ruth Fisher of the Home Economics Extension Service. All are welcome for Friday and Saturday sessions.
Karl Peters, formerly a correspondent and solicitor for the Press, rejoined service in the aviation branch and is now promoted to a clerkship to the camp captain at Camp Kelly Texas. He also reports he has joined the camp paper dedicated to aviation service personnel.
The Rev Dr George Edward Hawes pastor of Market Square Presbyterian Harrisburg will headline the Hershey Men's Club Sunday afternoon meeting at 3 o clock in Hershey Central Theatre He will discuss The Possible Meaning of the Recent Capture of Jerusalem in a masterly presentation Open to men and women with no admission or collection.
Collector B. F. Davis announces a federal income tax officer is in the county from January 2 to March 1. The office is in the Revenue Office Spooner Building Harrisburg and will be open daily to assist taxpayers in preparing their returns at no cost.
The Hershey Blacksmith Shop now operates with a complete electrical installation under Riley Shepler. R. H. Hull and assistants completed the wiring boosting efficiency and service quality.
The Hershey Men's Club has installed an emergency cook stove in the lunch room to replace gas supply issues that had hindered service. Officials say operations will improve immediately and patrons will be served more reliably.
This week in Hershey the management presents a Saturday program at 8 15 featuring Geraldine Farrar in The Woman God Forgot in 5 reels plus a Paramount comedy. Admission is 17 cents. Wednesday shows a 6 reel feature When False Tongues Speak with Virginia Pearson and a Pathe news reel for 11 cents.
The Harrisburg Red Cross chapter orders 33 400 dressings monthly in eight kinds for soldiers in France. Hershey Auxiliary, chaired by Mrs. C V Glynn, pledges 2000 dressings monthly and seeks more workers for gauze and muslim dressings. The council meets midweek at Central Theatre with Friday junior meetings. Kinder garten children have supplied tin foil for the melting pot with proceeds credited to the Hershey Auxiliary.
Hershey High hosts PLR YMCA Lancaster Friday January 11. Hershey seeks to extend its home win streak as Professor Leininger referees a fast clever opponent. After the game an orchestra will provide dancing on the floor.
Miller, foreman at the Hershey department store, took his oath of office as justice of the peace, marking a local appointment in the community.
