Donald McCormick, Food Administration rep in Dauphin County, orders wheat flour sales limited to one part wheat substitute per part flour until further notice. Acceptable substitutes include cornmeal and rice. rye allowed until March 3. Public urged to conserve wheat and follow two wheatless days weekly and one wheatless meal daily. Continued on page 2.

Thrift and Patriotism Call for Saving in Pennsylvania

An exhortation to Pennsylvanians to save and deposit money in banks or buy War Savings Stamps for support of wartime funding. It urges living within means, maintaining savings habits, and trusting banks to supply funds while banks invest in Liberty Bonds.

Hershey Approves Cash and Carry Plan at Store

The Hershey Department Store launches a cash and carry groceries service aimed at cutting costs for housekeepers. First week sales doubled February 1917’s total, with hopes February 1918 will set a new economy record. Customers can buy Thrift Stamps at the store, turning 25 cents into a bond-like stake yielding 4 percent by 1923, and an information folder is available.

B Frank Zentmeyer starts as Hershey mail carrier with energy. He makes two daily rounds leaving the office at 7:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in a brisk schedule aimed at speeding local correspondence.

Electric Light and Power Conserves Fuel With Evening Lighting Plan

Notice to consumers states street lights will burn 6 30 to 9 00 p m on weekdays and 6 30 to 9 30 p m Saturdays. All alternating current will be cut off 11 p m and restored at 5 p m until further notice.

Two Letters From Soldiers at Strand Palace London

Soldiers in 1918 write from Strand Palace Hotel in London about arrival on Christmas Day, rest camp after a four mile march, sight seeing, tea drinking, and plans to work through February. One letter notes railways and chocolate shortages, the other requests home news via Hershey Press and describes duties as Post Exchange Officer at Fort Du Pont.
