The Christmas Seals drive draws strong support as Hershey and schools push high sales to fight tuberculosis. Local pupils have sold over 20,000 seals with a likely total near 30,000, surpassing last year’s 24,449. Prizes reward high sellers, and every citizen is urged to participate, aiding nursing services dispensaries and sanatoriums for victims.
Hershey Post No. 386 American Legion cancels all scheduled basketball games starting December 15 due to key players leaving for Cuba and a new Railway Mail Clerk appointment. The team, which had a 3-2 home record and faced Reading Walnuts and All Collegian team, thanks the public for support.
The Olivets beat the Golde team of Lancaster 34 to 30 in a fast paced game highlighted by sensational shooting. W Zimmerman led the Olivers with six baskets and strong passing to dominate the first half, while Golde nearly closed the gap in the second half. Friday’s match preview notes a December 17 clash with the York Pros, known for a storied cage rivalry.
Washington Camp No 705 P O S of A will meet December 20 on the second floor of the Central Theatre Building. Final action on by law revision will be taken and all members are urged to attend for the camp and member benefit. Meeting opens at 7 30 PM.
John Elder Men’s Bible Class will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday evening December 21 at 8 00 p m promptly at the home of George H Dressler 38 W Chocolate Ave All members urged to attend and friends invited.
The Corner Drug Store benefit staged by the High School on December 9 drew good attendance and praise for an amateur Lebanon cast led by Raymond Kline as Muggs Murphy. Cast members included Hamilton Doolittle Harry Zoll and Miss Madeline Maguire with a chorus of college students and several supporting roles. The event raised a handsome sum for the athletic fund, and the faculty and scholars express sincere gratitude for the patronage.
The Dauphin County Farm Bureau announces two cars carrying 800 bushels each of disease free russet seed potatoes from Michigan. One car will serve Hummelstown and surroundings under A B Shenk. the other will be in Harrisburg led by E B Mitchell. Michigan potatoes yield about fifty seven bushels more per acre in tests across fourteen Dauphin farms. The Farm Bureau located and aided bulk ordering but did not provide further help. Dauphin County farmers are praised as pioneers.
The YWCA Educational committee presents the second illustrated lecture by Dr. Newell Dwight Hillis at Central Theatre on Friday December 17. The first lecture honored Puritans in the Old World, and the second covers The Puritans in the New World with lantern-slide illustrations and historical accuracy. Prof. A M Hinkle will again introduce the talk and read the second lecture.
The Keystone Rangers held their December 9 session at Paul Shultz’s home. The new constitution was read and unanimously adopted. Officers elected: Advisor George Hench, Scribe Walter DeVerter, Finance Officer Pearl Reed, General Secretary W. Schwenk. House warming planned at the Ranger cabin in Clay Rock.
Mr. W A Spurry of Curtis Publishing visits Hershey Consolidated Schools led by Principal A M Hinkle to propose a Country Gentleman subscription plan. Each $1.00 yearly copy yields fifty cents to the school, with an estimated 350 subscriptions expected to raise about $175 for wall pictures equipment athletics or other school uses.
Recently wed Mr Victor Brown and Mrs Brown were hosted at a lavish Sunday dinner by the groom's parents Mr and Mrs Harry Brown at East Main street Palmyra. The guest list included extended family with gifts and best wishes for the couple's future journey.
Miss Alice Woomer daughter of Mr and Mrs R S Woomer was their honor guest at a Saturday afternoon party December 11 at the family home on Java Avenue. Little guests enjoyed games sun and refreshments before singing good bye. Attending were Edith Backenstow Treva Dise Mildred Edwards Betty Hershey Kathryn Hershey Marion Inks Julia Owens Gladys Rhoads Altesta Slichter Ruth Tinney and Phyllis Gilman.
Word from Charles Bringer in Tiavana says John Bordner Edward Lewis Frank Harvey and Harry Wirth arrived safely in Havana. Bringer met the quartet on arrival escorted them to places of interest dined them and they then departed for their final destination Central Hershey.
The Diakonia Bible Class of Holy Trinity Lutheran Sunday school will gather Thursday evening December 16 at Mrs. Yost’s home on Trinidad Ave. All members are urged to attend.
A new winter dance floor will open on Wednesday December 22 in the vacated hardware and furniture store rear. The space features a smooth floor, central orchestra platform, and cloak rooms for both sexes. The Mannix Dance Orchestra of Harrisburg will headline the opening, with semi monthly dances planned and potential weekly events if patronage supports.
The tenth episode of Bride 13 unfolds at the Central Theatre with a castle siege by pirates, the U S Fleet advancing by sea and air to rescue thirteen kidnapped American brides. Canadian Mounties led by Bob Norton and Lieut Morgan coordinate a daring assault as Edmund Storrow delivers the ransom and fights against stopping the rescue. The action peaks as bayonets, ram and rifle fire collide in a dramatic climax.
