The Hershey Christmas Savings Club grows to 700 members with over 18000 dollars to be distributed on the 15th. S C Stecher, treasurer of the Hershey Trust Company, praises the program as a strong saver and notes gains over 1912 and 1913. The plan will be refined for even payments and more convenient use.
For two weeks Hershey Chocolate Company has filled daily consignments of cocoa bound for Europe. The war has disrupted European cocoa supplies and increased U.S. demand as agents seek Hershey as best prepared to supply.
The savings plan teaches thrift through deposits to teachers, then to Principal Keboch for Hershey Company investment. It has 202 depositors with total deposits of 1457.97 and ten week deposits of 350.47, with Italian children among the most enthusiastic savers.
The Teachers Institute gathered Tuesday evening at M. S. Hershey Consolidated Public School with eighteen members despite bad weather. Prof I D Keboch presided and Miss Hershey served as secretary.
On Thanksgiving Day the dleven girls sat down to a family turkey dinner in the cafeteria of the W. O. The table was prettily decorated and the sonat was greatly enjoyed.
Manager Heilman presents Quo Vadis a two hour and twenty minute epic that critics hail as a history lesson and spectacular drama. The December 5 show offers a 2:30 matinee and 8:15 evening performance with accompanying literature for context.
The Male Chorus organized Monday night with members L. P. Emerick E. J. Krause W. C. Brinker Charles Peiffer Chance Phillips John Leitzinger Edwin Schwenk James Brunner Ralph Hartman J N Smith H W Stine Williams and Thomas Ingram W L Dubois leads with Krause at piano. The group aims for high class music, with future meetings in the Hershey Men's Club room and expected larger attendance next time.
The Hershey Store in Lebanon Valley reports a rush of shoppers the first Saturday of the Christmas season. A big Christmas tree and hundreds of new toys drew crowds all week while a free photo gallery event attracted about a hundred children with parents. The store now offers a larger 28 department stock providing city shopping benefits and reasonable prices. Shoppers are urged to buy early to get first pick of new goods.
The Spot hosts a unique evening inviting all. Admission is 15 cents for ladies and 20 cents for men.
Earley-Houser John Warley of Palmyra and Miss Katie Mouner of Grantville wed at the United Brethren parsonage JWghaplyro on Thanksgiving evening at 4 o clock. Rev. H I Rhoad officiated. They will reside in Palmyra.
The Hershey Industrial School expanded with a new unit housing twenty orphans from Dauphin Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The facility features two stories eight rooms bath dormitory and modern ventilation and temperature control. The school operates in kindergarten primary and main divisions with plans for machine shops and skilled trades. students pursue practical work and academic progress with a Thanksgiving celebration noted by staff and pupils.
Hershey Free Public Library provides a study table for Consolidated Schools pupils to consult dictionaries and encyclopedias. November saw 224 juvenile books borrowed and 77 non fiction reads, with 763 total exchanges and a daily average near 32. New members rose by 48 to 698, a record month overall.
Manager J R Kreider of the Hershey Transit Company says arrangements with the Conestoga Traction Company will run Lancaster picnics directly to Hershey next year. The new Elizabethtown to Hershey line is to be completed in the spring.
New stamp taxes require prepaid freight on Hershey Transit lines. Conductors will issue receipts and add one cent for the revenue stamp to every bill. The law took effect December 1.
Fasnacht Danial Wasnacht of Campbelltown and Misa Mabel Yorty of Hummels town married on Thanksgiving. The bride works at Hershey Chocolate Co for years, while Fasnacht was with the company here until last year and moved to Lititz. They plan to reside in Lititz.
Hershey Men's Club, housed in a three story granite building with annex, has grown to 450 members and broad programs. Juniors excel with weekly topics from social work to photography led by a team, while seniors pursue gymnasium work. A Purpose Club of twelve officers meets biweekly to discuss club possibilities.
Thanksgiving in Hershey featured union church services at Derry Presbyterian and Holy Trinity, with strong sermons by Rev. N L Linebaugh and Rev. Frederick C Krapf. A family turkey dinner at Hershey Cafe and a well attended Horshey Central Theater program highlighted the day, capped by the Lebanon Pleasant Quintette.
The Hershey Men's Club hosts open Sunday talks at the Central Theater with strong attendance from Hershey Palmyra and nearby towns. Dr. Charles Calvert Ellis spoke on Does It Pay to be Good and praised the value of kindness, money, honor, and memory. Dr. W. T. Sherman Culp will speak next on Uncrowned Kings with free admission.
The Quarterly Communion at First United Brethren church drew 115 attendees. Four new members joined at the morning service: Mr and Mrs W L Dubois from Buffalo N Y and Mr and Mrs Herbert A Newton from North Weymouth Mass. Mr Dubois is a chemist at Hershey Chocolate Company and Mr Newton is postmaster of Hor shay.
Weekly visitors tour the M. B. Hershey Consolidated School and praise its size equipment and facilities. Mr W H H Zorfass superintendent of Clearfield Public Schools toured after school and said he was delighted with what he saw.
