Houston attorney to press Port case for new trial
Houston attorney Jack Zimmermann will return to New Braunfels Tuesday morning to seek a new trial for convicted murderer David Port. Judge Robert Pfeuffer said Judge McMaster asked Judge Jon Hughes to take over the Port case. A 9 a.m. hearing will decide if Zimmermann can file the motion. Port, 18, was convicted of the 1984 Debora Schatz killing and sentenced to 75 years. The hearing will be in Comal County as the case has not yet returned from Harris County. Port’s move to New Braunfels followed a venue change from Harris County in 1984. Zimmermann contends McMaster’s residency raises authority questions and has also sought to remove McMaster, a request denied by Visiting Judge Ernest Coker. McMaster later transferred the case to Hughes.
