State touts progress at troubled facility

Texas officials defended改善 at state facilities for mental retardation amid DOJ findings. Adelaide Horn, commissioner, cited overhauls at Mexia State School after three staff were fired for a January death and said reforms target administration, infirmary closure, and reduced emergency medication. She noted new concerns from a death at another facility and highlighted broader statewide death toll and dos not resuscitate orders. The DOJ report urged more integration and improved care across 12 facilities.

District eyes Blue Cross rate talks and state plans

CISD Superintendent Marc Walker said the district pressured Blue Cross Blue Shield to resist a 19.7 percent increase and noted rising insurance costs may push the district toward the state funded plan. He cited most districts use the state plan but CISD could still choose its own provider if needed. District employees criticized last year’s move to a traditional PPO, which raised individual rates from 41.50 to 90 dollars monthly, though district contributions increased and individual costs fell to 65. Trustee Bill Swint urged healthier living to curb costs, stressing claims drive premiums.

Budget battles shape Texas spending amid protests and delays

Dallas lawmakers grappled with a sprawling 300 plus page set of amendments as House members redirected funds to local priorities after 12 hours of debate. The plan includes a $2,000 teacher pay raise, Medicaid rate increases, more tech funding, and $4.2 billion set aside for future tax cuts, while addressing lingering 2003 accounting deferrals.
