Pentagon halts payments to General Dynamics amid probe
The Pentagon cites four million dollars in monthly payments to General Dynamics while it probes millions in improper charges that may not benefit national security. Defense Secretary Weinberger says contractors must certify bills under penalty of perjury. Congress debates broadening the probe and limiting defense contractor costs, including PR expenses. General Dynamics claims innocence and promises to return funds if wrongful charges are found. The audit agency flags four point five million dollars in 1982 billings, including promotional items for the F-16 program.
