Veteran priest dies in China at 103
The Rev. Joseph Meng Ziwen, a Catholic clergyman active since the 1930s, died January 7 in Nanning at age 103. He secretly served as bishop to underground congregations from 1984 to 2003 while also working for the state backed church. Meng, born 1903, endured 20 years in a labor camp after 1951 and helped train young priests after his release. His death was confirmed by the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, though a cause was not disclosed.

Bavarian court upholds head scarf ban for teachers
The Bavarian Constitutional Court ruled that a ban on Muslim teachers wearing head scarves in state schools does not violate religious freedom or discriminate. The decision comes as other states consider similar restrictions while Catholic nuns remain unaffected. An Islamic association plans to appeal to Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court.
