London AP reports talks on international air travel between the United States and Britain edge toward failure with no agreement on free enterprise terms. An American official says Tuesday midnight Washington time deadline may be met without a basic accord as differences persist after Monday's session.
Uganda Radio reported no word on President Idi Amin as a spokesman said he had not been seen at his home since Friday. A Kampala information ministry secretary noted a cabinet meeting but could not confirm Amin's attendance while Nairobi Daily Nation asserted Amin was missing after a Saturday attack near Entebbe, 19 miles from Kampala.
G Robert Blakey named head of the House committee investigating the Kennedy and King murders. He urged a news blackout and asked reporters to leave the panel alone while it conducts the inquiry.
Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev told French hosts that the United States and the Soviet Union had made no apparent major progress toward limiting offensive weapons. He spoke at a 2 hour Rambouillet meeting with President Valery Giscard d Esteing during his France visit. Meanwhile American negotiator Paul Warnke, arriving in Moscow, said the talks were encouraging and pointed to continued military competition in the Indian Ocean.
The 1977 summer season begins with long daylight hours and mild conditions. Tuesday shows partly cloudy skies and highs in the 60s to low 70s, with lows in the 50s. Winds calm after a blustery spell as farmers cut hay in dry weather. Showers and storms forecast for Wednesday with mid 70s to low 80s highs and 50s to 60s lows across the state.
May consumer prices rose six tenths of a percent led by food and fuel costs, marking the fifth straight month of hikes. Cape Town AP report on Christiaan Barnard's attempt to graft a baboon heart into a 26-year-old Italian patient. The organ proved too small to sustain circulation. the patient died after 10 hours on bypass. Barnard noted prior animal-to-human transplants may buy time until a human heart is available.
The Two Rivers City Council approved 6.35 percent average hikes for 39 non-union employees and a raise for the city manager, totaling 32,165 dollars. The action followed a closed session and a split vote with one negative from Lee Ertman. Retroactive to Jan 1, 1977, the raises align with earlier union-negotiated increases. The council also authorized a seven-member advisory committee for the proposed community development block grant program and allocated 2700 dollars to finish the Lt Clarke tennis courts project. Burglar alarms at Neshotah Park and Zander Park shelters were suggested for exploration.
Israel's new prime minister Men ahem Begin said he would travel to Washington on July 18 for talks with President Carter after being confirmed by the Knesset in a 63-53 vote. Begin toasted Rabin and pledged asylum to 66 Vietnamese refugees rescued in the South China Sea.
Alewives have returned in large numbers boosting work for Two Rivers commercial fishermen. A spokeswoman for Frank Kulpa and Sons, operating two boats from the city, said the harvest picked up notably since Sunday. Eleven semi trucks loaded with alewives departed Two Rivers Monday for distribution.
Francis Schneider, a 20 year firefighter and town constable, received help after a fire at his repair shop. Residents delivered food, tools, and trucks from Kulpa boats, Susie Q Fish Co, and Charles Le Clair to aid. Alewife die-off linked to cold winter and rising temperatures prompts warnings and ongoing cleanup along Lake Michigan beaches.
