An unemployed Locust Grove man was arrested in Ottawa County and sheriff Mayes County Sheriff Glen Peter Weaver said authorities plan to question him about the sex murders of three Girl Scouts. Officers would travel from Mayes County to talk with the arresting subject in Miami.
CHICAGO AP says even if Congress ends Saturday mail delivery you may pay up to 16 cents for a first class letter next year. Deputy postmaster general William F. Bolger said the Postal Service board will consider the rise next month though final approval could take up to 10 months for rate reviews by the Postal Study Commission. He noted increases will be several pennies for first class and higher presses for other mail classes.
Arnold Miller apparently won re election as president of the United Mine Workers. He pledged to unify the divided union and restore peace to coalfields. Harry Patrick conceded this morning while Lee Roy Patterson, Miller’s closest challenger, did not yet acknowledge defeat.
Police recovered ten pounds of heroin worth about 6.5 million dollars in a North Side apartment raid. No arrests were reported. Investigators said the seizure is part of an effort to disrupt one of the nation s largest international drug rings, involving about 20 members and a supply chain from Mexico to Chicago, where heroin is distributed by dealers from New York, Wisconsin, Michigan and other states.
Eastern Airlines will reserve 65 percent of its seats for nonsmokers and guarantee a nonsmoking seat on request, potentially banning smoking in parts of the smoking section. The settlement with antismoking groups includes a $10,000 fine for denying nonsmoking seating, signaling a possible industrywide precedent.
