Last Mid East War POWs Exchanged by Israel Syria

Israel and Syria swapped their last prisoners from the October war. 367 Syrians 10 Iraqis and five Moroccans were flown to Syria on a Swissair jet and a UN Fokker while 56 Israeli POWs returned to Israel on a Damascus flight. UN patrols began along the cease fire line as crowds welcomed home the prisoners amid chaotic scenes.

Saigon reports a two prong North Vietnamese attack near Saigon killed 145, with 13 captured and 27 killed 63 wounded among government forces. Wisconsin panel rejects a $5 million school aid cut motion, keeps phase-out plan and raises district guarantees.

Gunman Killed by Police After Omaha Siege

In Omaha an ex convict in a tear gas and flame siege fired on officers from a rooming house near North Side. Elza Carr Jr. 33 wounded eight officers and two civilians before emerging from the burning building and being shot dead by police. Patrolman Paul Nields died of a head wound. several other officers were injured as Carr fired on them from upstairs. The standoff began about 9 30 p.m. after Carr’s half brother was wounded. Bystanders said Carr jeered as police urged surrender and tear gas was deployed. Fire engulfed the house in late stages.
