C&O Modernizes Pere Marquette No 10 Ferry Across St Clair
The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway spends 1 million on converting Pere Marquette No 10 into a 498 foot barge with a 98 foot power unit and three 900 horsepower diesel engines. It resumes freight service across the St Clair River between Port Huron and Sarnia after extensive modernization. Built at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co at over 11 million, No 10 launched October 20 1945 and entered service December 18 1945 to carry rail cars between Detroit and Windsor before serving the St Clair route. Mrs Mary Braun 60 of rural Manitowoc County was killed in a two car crash at the Clarkstown area near Reedsville at 7 43 p m Tuesday The crash on Highway 10 and North Third Street injured Leonard Braun 58 Daniel Aili 17 and Michael Preston 18 The coroner pronounced Braun dead at the scene and an inquest may be called The Hill car driven by Hill collided with the Braun car which was westbound on Highway 10 The Braun passenger was ejected and all injured were taken to Holy Family Hospital by Westing Ambulance Service

South Boston Schools Resume After Tense Desegregation Standoff
Boston authorities reopened South Boston High and nearby buildings with hundreds of police on hand to guard students after days of racial clashes. About 300 to 400 white pupils and 50 to 75 Black children entered under security by roughly 400 officers. Pupil passage included metal detectors, and access was limited to students and reporters as law enforcement maintained routes to the complex.
