Howard Hughes faces a nine count federal indictment over a scheme to depress Air West stock and force a sale. Co-defendants include Robert Maheu Chester Davis and David B Charnay. Hughes, sequestered in a Bahamas hotel, may be arraigned in two weeks as U S Attorney prepares for proceedings.
National Weather Forecasting Bureau predicts heavy cold and more snow across Wisconsin for the last weekend of 1973. Temperatures fall to the teens and single digits with flurries and cloud cover expected through Sunday, then possible clearing, followed by renewed snow chances Tuesday. State highways remain in good winter driving condition with some icy stretches on secondary roads.
Washington AP report says energy chief William E. Simon ordered a six degree cut in oil heated homes and set gasoline stations last in line for supply starting Jan 15. The move makes thermostat reductions a legal obligation with fines up to 5000 dollars for supplier violations. Commercial oil heated buildings must drop 10 degrees. Gas or coal heated buildings are excluded. New rules expand allocations for propane diesel and gasoline with detailed quotas and a three stage propane distribution.
Secretary Kissinger says the Soviet Union may contribute to Middle East stability after inflaming Arabs and signals willingness to cooperate with Moscow on a peace settlement with Israel Egypt and Jordan now on a common base.
