In Manitowoc at 909 Washington St the Lakeshore Technical Institute Adult Learning Center offers open lab style education decisions. Operated for about a year the center serves 65 adult learners in ABE GED Civics for New Americans and ESL with no fixed schedule. Open 9 am to 9 pm Monday through Friday many attend after work from 4 30 pm onward. Instructors note a diverse student body from first grade to college graduates and some LTI Manitowoc students seek help with subjects in their regular programs.
Sylvia Henderson of Manitowoc is the county s first to achieve a Life Master in Duplicate Bridge. A certified director and longtime club member, she earned the gold Life Master pin at the Manitowoc Duplicate Bridge Club Christmas party. Her career includes 65 regional sectional and national tournaments, with 300 master points required and gold and red points earned at national and regional events.
Five members of Boy Scout Troop 908 at St. Paul Catholic Church Manitowoc received the Eagle Award during a court of honor. Brad Pagels David Keery Max Wellhoefer Charles Olson and Rick Rexrode were cited for attaining the highest Scouting rank. The ceremony featured readings by officials and honored guests including Mayor Anthony Dufek and Council leaders.
Two Rivers news carrier Tim Lohr teams with his 14 year old Rat Terrier Buster to haul papers. Gifted by grandfather Joseph LeClair of Sun City, Arizona, Buster’s two wheeled harness carries the 11 pound dog along Tim’s daily route, starting last summer.
The Manitowoc Two Rivers Chamber of Commerce reports strong holiday retail prospects with good inventories and stabilizing prices. Executive vice president Robert Humphrey notes expected growth across most merchandise lines and continued deep discounts for Yuletide shoppers. Some items may show slight shortages, and stores will offer extended evening and Sunday hours.
Manitowoc board of education approved new salary increases and fringe benefits for about 35 clerical and secretarial staff. Increases take effect Jan 1 with a 5.2 percent overall raise and seven cents per hour from July 1. The district will pay 100 percent of single and 90 percent of family hospital and insurance premiums, raise retirement contribution to five percent, and grant a full day’s pay for the day before Christmas.
The Manitowoc Plan Commission heard a final study on a north side lakefront project from Waldo Boulevard to the north government pier. It envisions an offshore harbor containment vessel built by the Army Corps of Engineers at over 5 million dollars, plus a 800 foot causeway and marina facilities. The 30 acre vessel will hold 800000 cubic yards of dredge material, taking about 10 years to fill, then become a public park and recreation area.
Gilbert Schneider of Chilton survived a near fatal heart attack after immediate CPR and chest compressions by Sheriff George Vanish, deputies, firefighters, and ambulance attendants. The rescue showcased CPR training available to the public and credited with saving his life after his first heart attack in June.
Manitowoc Senior Citizens open a Santa Claus Store at the Manitowoc center Friday with revamped and new toys for those on the deserving list. Toys collected by the Kiwanis Club Toy for Toys program, area churches and schools. seniors prepare items for gift giving. Girls Scouts will carol and visit nursing homes as part of the season’s cheer.
