In Alcobaca and Porto, Portuguese Communist leader Alvaro Cunhal plans rallies as anti Communist violence grows. Locals report over 40 Communist offices damaged and four deaths in a month as non Communist parties and the church press for Goncalves removal.
Mary Ann Van Hoof, 66, issued her first public reply to church discipline over her visions linking to the Virgin Mary. She censured church officials, urged followers to remain loyal, and claimed the Virgin instructed continued work. About 3,000 gathered at the Shrine to the Queen of the Holy Rosary for the anniversary.
In Raleigh, Joan Little, a 21-year-old Black woman, is acquitted of second degree murder in the ice pick death of jailer Clarence Alligood after testifying she acted under forced sexual assault. Palestinian guerrillas clash with an Israeli naval vessel near Tyre in southern Lebanon. Two guerrillas are reported killed and one wounded, with Israel offering no immediate comment on the Palestinian account. In Daytona Beach a Wisconsin man undergoes surgery for amputation after a shark attack. Henry Peterson, 20, was bitten in waist-deep water about 20 feet from shore.

Madison police seized more than one ounce of heroin at a bus depot on Friday night. Patricia J. Ward, 20, Madison, and Robert N. Wiegel, 25, rural Sun Prairie, were arrested and charged with possession with intent to deliver. The arrests raise the count of suspects in the Madison area tied to illegal drug activity to 14.
