Marcellus G Riggs writes from Gettysburg Sept 23 1917 describing departure from Jefferson Barracks on Sept 21 traveling through Mt Vernon through Kentucky mountains into West Virginia and 19 states to arrive four miles from Ball town for training. He notes mountains tunnels and pretty girls and asks for stamps.
Mrs. Ella Riser Heinrich wife of William Heinrich died Saturday September 22 after a four month battle with pernicious anemia and complications. She was born Ella Riser January 12 1874 and had two sons Charles and Albert. A large funeral at St Marys church featured Rev Father Shauer with pallbearers named. Surviving relatives include her mother Mrs Mary Riser and several siblings. C. C. Doran was the mortician. Also noted is the death of Mrs W T Law at Wenona with funeral set for St Johns Episcopal church in Peoria area.

Thursday, Sept 27, lecture A Sunday School Journey Around the World with colored slides. Seats free. Everyone invited. Starts at 8 o'clock.
Presbyterian Church schedules Sunday school at 9 46 a m with A B Smith as superintendent. Morning worship at 11 o'clock Christian Endeavor at 6 30 p m Evening service at 7 30 p m Prayer meeting Thursdays at 7 30. Rev W Mastin pastor. Joseph's Church offers first Mass at 7 30 a m second at 9 30 a m Weekday Mass at 7 30 a m Rev Fr M J Brannan pastor Masses move earlier during hot summer months.
Sunday services include English mass and sermon at 8 o'clock high mass and German sermon at 10 30 a m Vespers and benediction. Weekday mass at 8 a m Saturdays at 7. Rev Fr Andrew Schauer officiating.
