Whitefield farmers held the annual picnic at Sugar Grove on Sept. 13 with speeches by Joshua Myers of Roberts township and Congressman G. L. Fort. The event featured a band, organists, toasts, and dancing despite cool weather and wore coats.
Mr Samuel Divilbiss of Saratoga township died after a runaway team frightened by a passing railroad train caused a fall and skull injury. His wife preserved the carriage as bystanders assisted, and he died at Dr Miner’s home in Wyoming. Funeral services were held at the Saratoga church with Rev Woolley preaching.
The Republican county convention met at the court house in Lacon with full township representation though some delegations were incomplete. Officers chosen included F S Potter of Henry as chairman and J L Root of La Prairie as secretary. A county central committee was named from each town, and N M Laws, N Moore, F S Potter, H D Bonham, A B Webber, J W Hurd, T E Guptin, W J Port, Samuel Skelton, Jesse S Roberts, J L S DeVault, and M Bullman were listed. Hanson J DePue named county treasurer and G Wightman county surveyor. The session adjourned after a harmonious meeting. Mrs Isabella Henry died Thursday, laid to rest beside her husband in Bonham graveyard. the long-standing tumor on her chin, thirty inches around, contributed to her decline. Four children survive, inheriting the Whitefield farm. A dispute over Methodist Protestant North Lineis University alignment favored LaHarpe.
