Fish Shipments Show Decrease in 1908 Amid Light Yields
The 1908 census suggests a slight drop in freshwater fish shipments despite Illinois River leading the nation. Unfavorable water stages and reduced trespass on hunting club preserves are cited along with legal action and injunctions. State and federal hatcheries release millions of young fish and rescue stranded stock. Mussel fishing and pearl value rise slowly as mussel beds shrink. Modern steam launches aid hauling, with consolidation among buyers and wage-based crews.
