Fire Drives Destruction At Conrad Apfel Farm

A Thursday afternoon fire swept two barns a buggy shed tool house and a hen house on Conrad Apfel s farm two miles below town. Sparks from a passing Rock Island train are blamed as the main cause with a high eastern wind and dry conditions increasing the danger. The dwelling house survived thanks to a bucket brigade and two protecting cedar trees. Loss to Apfel includes crops and equipment totaling about 2500 dollars with insured items around 1176 dollars. Fire also damaged hedge and fences on nearby farms.
