First Dutch Settlement of Manhattan and Name Changes

The Dutch claimed the Hudson drainage basin from Henry Hudson and set a trading post on Manhattan in 1610. A permanent settlement appeared in 1613, and Dutch governance lasted until 1664 when the English captured the island. The city’s name evolved from Manhattan to New Amsterdam in 1647 and then to New York after the 1664 takeover.
