New Prison Plan Moves Joliet to New Site and Aggregate

A bill introduced in the Illinois House by David E. Shanahan proposes moving Joliet Penitentiary to a new site with a 500 000 dollar appropriation for land purchase and plans for new buildings. The plan consolidates northern penitentiary and state care institutions under one administration, aiming to cut costs and provide better air and light for inmates. The total project could cost 1.5 to 2 million dollars, financed over ten years, with land near steel plants valuable for manufacturing use. Five potential sites exist, three preferred by the governor and lawmakers, and the current prison would be abandoned with condemnation.

Call for School Assembly Room and Electric Lighting

The school building should repurpose the unused basement as a workshop and convert the third story into a large assembly room to host literary gatherings. The cramped high school room hinders meetings and comfort, while electric lighting is needed to replace oil lamps. The community is urged to fund these improvements at a small outlay before 1904 ends. The note ends with thanks for Jay Jones and his San Jose Mercury Herald special edition.
