Unrequited Love Ended in Tragic Fire of Mabel Greene
Mabel Greene 27, of Lacon, formerly of Normal and Chicago, committed suicide March 11 by gas at 6146 Woodlawn Ave Chicago. She left a note to her sisters and to Mrs Maria Cook, mother of her former fiancé John Loring Cook, saying she was tired of life and wanted to be with her mother. The engagement had ended last year after a broken hopeful marriage plan, and Greene had moved to Chicago seeking work at the University of Chicago. A coroner’s inquest found death by self-inflicted gas exposure.

Attacks on the Canal and Illinois obligations cited
The Springfeld State Journal defends keeping the Illinois and Michigan Canal as a public highway. It notes federal land grants funded its construction with a 1829 pledge to maintain it toll free for government use, and cites canal commissioners showing the state has not spent a dollar since inception. The piece accuses Chicago trust papers of misrepresentation and asserts the canal’s value and current state treasury balances.

Sportsmen face a $1 annual tax to carry a gun under a proposed Illinois hunting and game law. The bill, backed by state and local groups, would license all hunters, hire ten wardens, and fund enforcement, with farmers exempt on their property.
