Peoria to Henry speed boat race thrills Peorians on river
The Peoria to Henry race of 1912 drew a large crowd as 13 boats covered the 34 mile course amid ideal weather. Ella Irene led briefly before disqualifying for early crossing, Julia III posted the fastest valid time of 1 hour 38 minutes 25 seconds, while Rolly Truitt’s skipalong still holds the river speed record at 1 hour 31 minutes from four years prior. Merchants posted a $50 purse for a six mile endurance race, but only one boat arrived, disappointing spectators.

Our Water Power by George W Weber and Taft era views
George W Weber argues in a leaflet that U S water power could rival coal. Herbert Knox Smith notes GE and allies control 60 percent of developed U S water power. Weber cites 500 million tons coal used yearly versus 200 million horsepower available from water resources, promising to double power via hydro if conserved. He references dam projects in Schleswig Holstein using tidal flow to drive turbines, predicting water power can supply transportation manufacturing and lighting when coal runs out.
