Republican Judicial Convention Nominates Miles on Fourth Ballot

The Republican tenth judicial district convention at the Jefferson hotel Peoria nominated Charles V. Miles of Peoria on the fourth ballot to fill the circuit court vacancy from Judge Clyde E. Stone. J H Magoon of Marshall Co. was runner up on first ballots. Putnam County’s partial reports hindered Magoon’s early lead.

Steamer Columbia Unfit for Passenger Traffic

Diver W E Dunscomb reported the steamer Columbia unsafe at voyage start, citing a hole over fourteen by four feet in the hull and rotted timbers. The sinking killed over 500, with eighty five drowned, and indictments are likely. coroner's jury received the findings last Saturday morning.

Ottawa to St Louis water freight boost from Buffalo Rock sands

A Burge line contract with American Inland and Overseas of Chicago will haul Commonwealth Silica sands from Buffalo Rock to St Louis by water via I and M canal and Illinois River. Ottawa and La Salle clubs back the plan. Maiden trip to St Louis to occur within ten days.
