Illino is Valley Oak Forests Diminished by Time
Sixty years ago the Illinois valley boasted vast timber from bluff to bottom along the Illinois river from the Mississippi junction to Des Plaines and Kankakee. Giant oaks shaded bluffs and river bottoms, but early railroads and wood use felled the forests as farms expanded and bridges and ties required timber. River bottom timber, once ample along 800 miles, has steadily declined as plow and pasture replaced woodlands.
