Community items report visits by Mrs Caldwell and Gaddis family, church events, and a large audience at the 4th Street church. Notes on the O. S. officers election, Saturday program, and a stock show highlight local life and farming pride in Marshall County.
After a quarrel at Bureau Junction John Wehr shot and killed Charles A Hopper then fled toward Peoria. He boarded an early passenger train to Peoria, was spotted by the conductor, and arrested at Morton street Peoria. Wehr surrendered when surrounded by police in the smoking car and was jailed. He claimed Hopper tried to rob him at a Bureau saloon before the shooting. Sheriff Spaulding escorted him to Princeton and then to Henry to avoid mob violence. Hopper, a cripple employed in Bureau’s roundhouse, was well liked.
Jerry Gilmer Drake of Putnam Illinois died at his parents home on Friday December 13 1918 from pneumonia aged 22. Born October 25 1896 he was a Putnam Consolidated school graduate class of 1914 and a devout church member who united with the Christian church in 1912. Funeral held December 10 at 2 o clock at the parental home with Rev Wil Shaw officiating and interment in Putnam cemetery. His death leaves his parents a sister and many relatives.
Edward B Kranz born June 2 1849 in Prussia died December 5 in Seattle Washington after a period of illness He had been a furniture dealer and merchant partner in Henry and later Fort Scott and Girard His family and brothers Joseph and Frank Mrenz survived and the funeral was conducted by Rev Father O Hagan with interment in Seattle Catholic Cemetery
Frank H Wolf 31 son of Fred Wolf of McNabb died Sunday December 15 after a pneumonia outbreak. He was a farmer with many friends, funeral held at Mt Palatine Catholic church Tuesday at 10 AM Rev Schaff officiating, burial at Mt Palatine cemetery. Allen B Smith assisted with burial. Undertaker A B Smith & Co reported seven out of town funeral calls since last Friday.
Mrs Mary Wilde departs for Florida as WR C hosts indoor picnic at Mrs Mary Newman home. Speeches praise Camp Grant service, soldiers in France, and wartime unity. Donations collected for Mrs Wilde and church, with prayers for safe return and a hopeful Christmas for needy children.
The Bushnell Presbyterian church grants Rev Rea Martin a year away to engage in YMCA service in France. He has enlisted in YMCA work and trained in Chicago. He will return after recovery from influenza to resume duties and the pulpit will be filled Sundays in his absence. Also promotion for a Paramount film The Amazons starring Marguerite Clark at Henry opera house on Friday December 20.
The church schedules Christmas sermons with topics on the angels and the Lord’s coming. A youth league event invites young people to sing and attend evening services. Grace Hartley remains absent due to illness, with a slow recovery noted.
Richard Reed uses a crutch and cane amid rheumatism. Death of Mildred Stogdell at Magnolia age 20. Christmas week holiday for staff and reminders to send letters early. War casualty lists include Ira Duraham and John Boland, Bradford trio killed or missing, Lt Blaine Blough in government service. Henry Schlosser dies of pneumonia. Miss Laura Henthorne dies at supper in Chillicothe. Lester Brown sees wounded soldiers in Chicago. State council of defense showcases seed corn at Chicago stock show with county winners. First National Bank of Henry stockholders to meet January 7 1919.
The Christmas observance at St Josephs Church will include High Mass at 6 AM, Low Mass at 7 30 AM, and High Mass at 9 AM with benediction after each service. Confessions are available Tuesday. pastor to deliver sermons on the feast with special music and flowers. Public welcome.
The Presbyterian Church led by Pastor A G Dusenberry promotes a Christmas season with sermons on Preparation for the Coming of Christ and Why Joy at Christmas. Morning service 11 00 a m with Sunday school at 9 45 a m. evening 7 30 p m and Young People's meeting at 6 80 p m. The Sunday school hosts a Christmas festival Tuesday with cantata Who Is Santa Claus and recitations. An annual supper on December 26 includes officer reports and new officer elections.
