James B Smith born slave to peoria minister
James B. Smith born May 1 1835 in Amherst County Virginia died August 26 1911 at Speer Illinois aged 78 years 3 months 25 days. Born into slavery he earned freedom at 15 and later took the name Smith after his master. He and his family moved north to Indiana then Iowa near Harrison before settling with Williamson United Presbyterian in Iowa where Mrs Williamson taught him to read and catechize. He served in the Civil War after marrying Julia A Williams in 1863 and raised four children Della Florence George and Mabel. three daughters died early and a son and three grandchildren survived. His second wife Fannie Lee joined him in 1879. A longtime Sunday school teacher and devoted Methodist, he died peacefully after a final family prayer. Funeral at Leonard Kittredge’s Lawn Ridge home led by Rev. Thomas Martin with burial in Ridge Cemetery.
