Brown Business College in Peoria and other local notices fill a week of happenings. Community updates include trading of a trotting mare for a stallion, women voting rights for city clerk at Sept. 9 primary, travelers in Chicago and Sterling, and highlights from schools, fairs, and local families. Bureau County Fair transport plans and a note on Gunson-Lyon family ties add depth to Putnam and surrounding county life.
In Toluca last week a car owned by J. P. Mathis crashed into a porch where three children played. A 15 month old child died from injuries. Heckom Mathis and Leo Ryan were in the car. Coroner Grade ruled the death accidental. Funeral services were held at St Ann's Catholic church.
Last week the Saratoga M E Church youth held a picnic at Smart's Grove with horseshoes and baseball, followed by a 6 PM lunch and a quarterly business meeting. Dr. Dwinell traveled to La Prairie for a quarterly conference as an ice cream supper raised over 10 dollars for church benevolences. no services were held due to a storm. Sunday school resumed, with services planned for next Sunday at 2 PM and 8 PM and Epworth League at 7 PM.
August Lith and family of Putnam escape serious harm when their Maxwell touring car is struck broadside at the John Albreicht corner by a big car from Atkinson after leaving a Tiskilwa baseball tournament. A top bow strikes a woman on the head causing a deep scalp wound. The Lith vehicle is wrecked, occupants thrown out, as the other car seemingly fails to slow. Dr Homer C Swift plans to move to Colorado, selling here and taking 160 irrigated acres with improvements, and 20 nearby acres to develop.
Dr. E. E. Barbour and Mr. H. H. Holmes from Peoria, who lead YMC A boys at Lake Senachwine, spent Tuesday forenoon in Henry. About 80 from the last squad enjoyed bathing boating and fishing during a two week outing, arriving in groups of 20 to 30. They rode the 12:33 train back to Peoria.
Charles W. Trone born October 11 1862 in Oxbow Putnam County Illinois died August 23 1914 at his home after a brief illness an abscess on the brain. He married Clara B Michener February 10 1886 and leaves six children and three grandchildren. He was a faithful neighbor and father and a member of several fraternal orders. The funeral was held August 25 at the family residence with interment in Caledonia cemetery.
The one story Brisco house on city property on First street was vacated by the Matthews family and sold to T. H. Hunt who could not place it on his lots and sold it to Samuel Bacon. Bacon hoisted the house on poles, hitched a traction engine, and moved it into the country. Also noted is a thrift teaching remark and High auto races with Sterrett Camp McManus and Kane attending in Sterrett’s Oakland. About 60 000 people attended the races and 15 000 cars were present.
Report from Winona Lake during the 28th Bible Conference notes spacious grounds on Winona Lake, grand tabernacle for four thousand, various halls, and long daily services. Mentions visiting speakers from London and Toronto, wartime family ties, and a general ambiance of healthful summer retreat. Also covers a family dinner, a Macomb Plattsburg Military Tract celebration, steamboat and freight through Henry locks, local ads, political notes, and market conditions.
Lacon Journal reports Prof King, who rides the David Swain steamer from Henry to the institute, fears for his sister Mrs Lissa King Byman of Aurora. She remains in Germany as no word has reached her family since the war began. Americans with loved ones abroad share anxious times and hope for news.
Bible school at 10 a m led by Wm Knight. preaching at 11 a m and 7 30 p m. Christian Endeavor at 7 30 p m on Why and How to Abolish War. Rev Reichel will speak on God In Human History in the morning and The Challenge of Today in the evening. Pastor H C Reichel away six weeks at Madison Wis state university. Sunday school maintains steady tone and enjoyed a picnic with ample ice cream.
On next Sunday Aug 3 the Presbyterian Church resumes regular services after a month. Sabbath school 9 45 a m supervised by A B Smith morning worship 11 a m Christian Endeavor 7 p m evening worship 8 p m Thursday prayer meeting 7 30. Ladies invited to Missionary meeting at Mrs S L Clift home Sept 2 Pastor R W Martin fosters attendance.
First Mass at 7 30 daily including Sunday. Second Mass Sunday at 9 30 with sermon. Sunday evening services and sermon at 7 30. Rev Fr Brennan, Pastor.
The candidate is a long time worker from Pomeroy Ohio and Girard Illinois. He started in a coal mine for ten years then farmed and ran a general business. He served on the township Board of Supervisors for four years and eight years as postmaster. Union support is noted from United Mine Workers locals.
Clarence Hedrick and Ben Leger of Toluca visited Henry on Friday. Mrs C A Frommel and daughter Jeannette returned from Kewanee. Nora Brown came back from Colorado where she sat out the summer. No preaching services were held as clergy were away. St Catherine Guild of St John’s Episcopal plans ice cream and cake in Central Park Aug 29. Mrs John Hofer of Whitefield left hospital and is convalescing at home. Roy Martin and wife are in Canada for two months as he seeks a threshing job at $9 daily. Lizzie Ramsey visiting relatives here. she lives in Buda. Peter Edscheidt suffered ptomaine poisoning after a La Rose picnic but recovered. The Henry Greys vs West Ends of Chicago ball game set for next Sunday with $500 to winner. West Ends won the Tiskilwa tourney, Greys challenged them at $250 a side. Game at Pavilion Park at 2:45. Admission 5 1/2 cents. Editor Blaisdell and wife left for Bradford. expect to return recovered in two weeks. Mrs. Howard Ash hosts Lena Oxski and Ella Schuman of Chicago this week. Mrs. Ash formerly Henry resident and high school alumna. Howard Williams read at lay preaching, Peace topic. Alden Hunter, Clarence Phillips, and Helen Hatfield of Peoria toured Starved Rock and Glen Park. Phillips injured by a splinter while tobogganing at Glen Park. splinter embedded in foot, surgery required. recovery hoped without complications.
