Old Burr Oak Marked Historic Indian Camp Site in Illinois

An ancient burr oak in Putnam county Illinois once served as a make shift fireplace for Native peoples with a cave like burn mark in the trunk. The tree stood over five feet in diameter and survived numerous storms before a lightning strike finished it. Local lore links Black Hawk and Pontiac to the site, once a rich Red Man country now faded to memory.
