The Lawton Music Club honored departing member Mrs. Floyd Monier who leaves for Henry Illinois with her husband. The evening began at Murray Theater then an ice course at Jones Bros drug store. President Mrs. I V Johnson praised her leadership and presented a souvenir spoon as Mrs Monier’s two year term noted innovations like the first May festival a charity concert and a colonial reception.
J C Irving saved parts of the Metamora House balustrade and walnut siding after demolition. He crafts a porch swing from the walnut wood and will present a baluster cane to Lewis G Stevenson, son of Adlai Stevenson. The Metamora House, built by Samuel Parke, was Woodford county’s first hotel and hosted Lincoln and Adlai Stevenson among local residents.
Former senator William E. Mason of Winsis spoke at a Chautauqua program announcing his candidacy for renomination as congressman at large. He backed woman suffrage and Philippine occupation, urged preparation over war to deter conflict, and criticized the government for inadequate salaries for first class lake steamer inspectors.
Sunday school sessions at 9 45 a m for seniors led by superintendent Wm Wheeler a men s Bible class at 11 a m and 8 p m public worship at 7 p m Epworth League and prayer meeting on Wednesday evening. The Woman s Foreign Missionary Society hosted the annual reception at the parsonage for the Little Light Bearers with Miss Ida Wescott of Chillicothe giving an address before her departure as a missionary to Singapore China. Older children entered the Kings Heralds and Margaret Helper delivered the valedictory. refreshments were served amid a welcoming turnout including visitors.
The ice cream social at the home of Henry Aukland last Saturday evening drew a smaller crowd due to rough muddy roads. About 15 dollars was cleared for the pastor's salary. The Epworth League cabinet plans a quarterly meeting after services next Sunday evening August 8 with all officers asked to attend. Visitors are welcome. Three guests attended last Sunday.
The Hudson Observer notes a strange moon display on the morning of March 8. Witnesses including milkmen and patrolmen saw a faint pink streak on the moon that turned blood red like a sword, then faded.
