The PTA at the high school met Tuesday afternoon April 10 with Mrs George Helper presiding. A program featured piano by Miss Grace Hartle and a violin duet by Miss Edna Hillabrand and Miss Rose Reinbeck. The group decided not to send delegates to the Illinois Congress of Mothers convention May 7 to 10 1917 in Bloomington. Entertainment chair Miss Oscar Davis reported moving pictures at the Opera House on Friday night April 3 and a patriotic drill by school boys. An invitation to join the National Educational Association was read along with a memorial booklet for Mrs McMullen first president of the Illinois Congress. Officers elected include President Mrs George Helper first vice president Mrs A G Hillabrand second vice president Mrs Oscar Davis secretary Miss Alice Gilpin treasurer Mrs Mary Stephens. The association voted to present a new flag for the public school building.
County Superintendent Edgar Nichols calls for universal display of the American flag in every school and home. He urges patriotic action amid national crisis, instructing school boards to provide flags and staffs and to hold regular flag pledge observances.
Mrs May Burkhart received 1240.26 from Union Central Life through agent Oscar Davis for her late husband’s policy. The 1000 face value plus a 21.59 dividend and two post maturity dividends of 11.67 and 12.27 were paid, with 0.69 deducted for immediate cash. The policy was issued in 1900 when Burkhart was 29 15.
Mrs James E Noyes of Bradford died Thursday April 5 after a long illness at age 68. She was long a resident of Saratoga township before moving to Bradford and was a member of the ME church and a charter member of the Bradford Order of Eastern Star.
The April 21 election for president and three Board of Education members of School District 35 includes a vacancy caused by George C. Helper's death. Candidates listed span J Archie Williams J Linn Downey Vernie Ketchum Rev F W Haist Benj Ransom with a free-for-all ballot. Polls open 2 to 7 pm at City Hall.
A large enthusiastic audience gathered Sunday at the Opera House for a union temperance meeting led by a chorus choir. Mayor John T. Conger praised city progress under prohibition and budget discipline, noting debt reduction and municipal improvements. He urged Henry to join Illinois towns adopting the white banner of prohibition. Next Sunday features talks by Prof. H. B. Watts of Princeton at 2 30 and City Attorney Thomas J. Welch of Kewanee at 7 30.
David Aitchison born March 18 1883 in Strathaven Scotland died April 6 1917 at his home in La Prairie Marshall County Illinois after a one week illness. He came to the United States in 1865 lived near Woodstock then Marshall County. He married Agnes Shearer Oct 5 1869 in Joliet and had seven children. Funeral held at United Presbyterian Church with a church quartet and pianist. Interment in United Presbyterian Cemetery.
Mrs May Lofgren of tria city files suit in the May term circuit court for divorce from Emil Lofgren on non-support charges and seeks custody of their six year old son John Emil Lofgren. An Opera House program Friday night for the motion picture David Harum is sponsored by the Parent-Teachers association, not the Child Welfare League as some think.
The Ladies of St Mary's church announce a baking and candy sale to be held all day Saturday the 14th in the Jones building. Proceeds support church work and community outreach.
The Presbyterian church outlines week events with Sabbath school at 9:45 a.m. led by A. B. Smith, morning worship and communion at 11 a.m., Christian Endeavor at 6:30 p.m., and a 7:30 p.m. Union Temperance meeting at the Opera House with Kewane city attorney Thomas Welch as speaker. Prayer meeting at 7:39 p.m. Thursdays with choir rehearsal afterward. The Lord's Supper will be observed at the morning service next Sunday and benevolence offerings will be taken.
Easter observances occurred at 6 7 30 and 11 with a choral 1 o'clock service featuring Processional Hymn 109 and Anthem Great Joy. Sunday afternoon baptisms included Mrs Ross and Mrs McLaughlin presented by Mrs Arthur Smith and Mrs Coe, plus Helen Virginia Duke with sponsors Clarence Duke, Miss Clara Noyes and Mrs Russell Taylor.
The Christian Endeavor meets Sunday evening at 6 with Dr. Murphy starting a sermon at 6 30 on Court Scenes from the Bible titled David At the Court of Saul. A union service at the Opera House follows at 7 30 with strong urging to attend. Dr. Murphy preaches Sunday morning at Putnam.
Rev. L. G Landenberger will not conduct services in Henry until April 22. He preached in St Louis on Wilder Street and will be in Springfield on April 15. The general convention meets in Philadelphia May 15 to 22, with a centennial gathering on Saturday May 19 and a banquet at the Hotel Bellevue-Stratford.
Sunday school at 9 45 a m led by Mrs Wheeler superintendent. Men’s Bible class at 11 a m. Public worship at 830 p m with sermon by the pastor. Epworth League service at 730 p m. Union Temperance meeting at the Opera House with pastor and congregation. Prayer meeting Thursday. Cordial invitation from J E Mercer pastor.
St John Church holds Holy Communion at 9 45 a m with Sunday school at 11 a m and matins with litany and sermon. There will be no evening prayer.
St Marys Church lists Sunday services with 8 oclock Masses and 2 30 p m vespers at St Tosaph Church. Weekday Masses at 8 and 7 30 am. Union Temperance meeting at Henry Opera House Sunday 2 30 pm with Prof H E Watts and 7 30 pm with Hon Thomas J Wesch. Theft notice warns offender will be prosecuted.
Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Burt return to Henry with children and grandchildren after a visit to Normal. Presbyterial Ladies’ Aid to meet at Mrs. Potter’s home. Longshore Park offered as a U.S. military camp site by Dr. George A. Zeller. Funeral processions for Mr. George Vail and relatives recalled by neighbors. Debates and local election results noted for Senachwine township. Henry excursionists’ boat Columbia may join navy service. captain Mehl offered it for war. Mrs. William Harney sells Monroe Street home to Victoria Halbleib for 3600 dollars. Mrs. Harney plans to live with her children in Bradford as she ages.
