Mermaid Sails to Peoria in Narrow Escape Tale
Will Green of this city sold his motor boat Mermaid to Carl Gumbel, Peoria Daily Journal sports editor. Will and Mike Cassidy embarked at dawn with nerves and spirits high, but gale winds and towering waves forced a perilous voyage downstream toward Peoria. Mike, a seasoned sailor, suffered heart trouble and nervous collapse, while Bill maneuvered the craft to safety at Kellys Beach before continuing to Peoria for care and recovery. The ordeal adds to a string of sea stories of escape from danger on rough waters and political peril feared by locals.
