Residents urge safety at the Route 18 Route 29 junction west of Henry after multiple accidents and heavy truck traffic. They criticize state delay in installing signals despite calls to slow speeds and protect crossing vehicles.
A three hour Rt 29 18 traffic survey found 500 cars per hour with no stop sign required per Mayor Warner. City considers drainage projects on Harmony Circle North Street and Front Street near Henry Harbor plus a railroad right of way proposal awaiting Illinois Commerce Commission approval. Budgeted pool totals and radiological defense gear were reviewed and leaf burn ban cited plastic bag pickup option.
Governor Ogilvie appoints Harold B Steele of Princeton area to a nine member Judicial Inquiry Board. The panel, with six others including three Chicagoans and three downstate residents, will investigate judicial conduct and initiate complaints under the new Illinois constitution.

Mrs Finmar Schlosser of Hopewell Township supplied a sunflower for display at Henry News Republican. The specimen, though unmeasured, is said to rival a garden plant of 18 inches in diameter and 47 inches in circumference. A photo was sent to Organic Gardening magazine for contest entry.
Charles He Guede 20 of Lacon was sent to the Illinois Penal Farm at Vandalia to serve a six month sentence after pleading guilty to drunken driving in Marshall County Circuit Court. He was fined 250 dollars and 10 dollars court costs for illegal possession of liquor after his car crashed into Walter Van Ostrand’s home on Indian Town Road in Henry.
On September 22 two groups at Henry Grade School heard a bicycle safety program arranged by Country Companies and Henry Police. After slides and a film, children received safety booklets. participants included Henry Police Officer Mike Koppien, Don Gibbs, HR Heriik, Doug Sommer, Clarence Bergfeld, and Chief Harold Kennedy. Read Bros., Gambles, and Nearly Hank aided by selling lights and reflectors through October 30, with police on duty Saturdays 9 to 2 at city hall to help riders adjust brakes and install equipment.
Henry to host a new Illinois State Employment Service office starting Friday October in the Marshall Putnam Public Aid office on Second Street. Officials say the office will handle work registrations job orders development placement and testing to place unemployed residents in local jobs and reduce reliance on urban centers.
Pontiac Republican Carl T Hunsicker launches a bid for the new 39th district state representative nomination. A five term General Assembly veteran with prior roles on the Pontiac city council and Livingston county board, he cites committee work on agriculture elections and public utilities and notes his background in farming and sign painting. The March 21 primary date is set for the revamped district that includes parts of Livingston LaSalle DeKalb Kane and Kendall counties.
Mrs Joe Allen Jr of Lacon Marshall County chaired the Youth Farm League fundraiser in Marshall County. Total proceeds from the caramel corn sale reached 300 dollars with Henry Woman's Club and the Lacon Toluca and Varna Junior Woman's Clubs coordinating in towns. The Youth League lauds workers and all contributors, noting special thanks to Hotel Henry for extending the project through the weekend.
The Putnam County Community School District 93419 considers disposal of donated old taro farming machinery. Mr and Mrs Car Kopp request to view and acquire the equipment for their Geneseo farm. The Board weighs keeping it within the county or transferring to a museum outside the focal area.
Park committee member. States Attorney Curley Boyle spoke on forming park districts and their powers and taxation. After questions the group opted not to pursue a park district referendum and planned fundraisers for McNabb Park. Attendees included Lynn Griffith Sydney Glover Bill Pletsch Mrs Ed Stolper Dr John Ehrhardt Harold Grasser and Mrs Donald T Nelson.
A public hearing will be held in Lacon at 1 30 pm on November 4 1971 regarding forming the Whitefield Saratoga Drainage District. Lands in Whitefield Township and Saratoga in Marshall County Illinois are listed for district boundaries and the plan includes a main open ditch, a submain lateral, about fifteen tile laterals, grade control structures, and drainage into Senachwine Creek then the Illinois River near Chillicothe.
