Marshall County Officials Meet at LaRose School
Marshall County high and grade school principals met at LaRose to discuss next year activities. Attendees from Henry included Roy Steele and Mrs Steele with T A Baker of Henry Grade School. They plan county grade school softball with eight teams and a trophy, first round tomorrow at Varna, finals in Lacon on October 13.

No Federal Funds So Far for Marshall Putnam PWA Plans
Illinois municipalities communities and organizations have filed 498 PWA applications for the 1938 program. By Sept 10 1988 presidential approvals issued 243 grants and three loans totaling 34 688 107, 89 000 in loans, with projects costing 77 147 986. Marshall and Putnam counties show no allotments yet though pending applications exist for Henry Varna and Hennepin.

Short Apple Crop Report From Illinois Growers
Illinois apple growers report a very short crop this year across the state with only a modest recovery at some locations. Richard Schneider near Henry notes about a third of a crop while Wagner Orchards show a 20 percent decline due to youth and late emergence. Charles Knight, with a 20 acre farm, says bearing is light but maturing trees yield more than last year. Despite limited supply, fruit quality remains high and demand is strong, with prices lower than Peoria markets. Varieties include Grimes Golden, Jonathan, Red and Yellow Delicious, Minklets, Snow, Nash, Glenn and Dominoes. Illinois Agricultural Association notes a bumper crop elsewhere and short locally, with active market and fair prices. Storage at Illinois Fruit Growers Exchange is about 2,000 bushels versus 50,000 last year. Most of the crop has been sold. Jonathan fetches 1.25 to 1.40 dollars per bushel, Grimes 0.90 to 1.16, Red Delicious 1.25 to 1.50, with Golden Delicious and others ready to pick.

Old Roberts House Wood To Be Inlaid In State Gavel
Mrs Inez Held regent of the Loch Chapter Lacon and Mrs Jennie Allen Christopher Lobingier Chapter of DAR secured four pieces of walnut from the original porch of the historic Old Roberts House on Route 89 between Magnolia and Varna. The wood will be inlaid in a state gavel to be used by the State regent. The DAR chapters seek to place a marker at the home and note Livingston Roberts born 1812 in Kentucky died near Varna 188? aged 77. The Roberts cabin was built in 1838 and the homestead on a Black Hawk era stockade route once a stage station on the Chicago to St. Louis road. The farm is now owned by Mr Schultz.

The Fundamental Bible Church of Henry on Western Avenue will be occupied this week with regular services this Sunday led by Rev. A A Smith. The new concrete block structure with face brick trim cost 3800 dollars, built largely by Smith and donated labor, and will be fully paid by March 1989 with lands donated by local congregants and nearby churches.

Henry Sanders dies at Henry Hospital at 77
John Henry Sanders, born May 8 1861 in Kentucky, died September 24 at Henry Hospital aged 77. A familiar Henry figure and former enslaved person linked to Civil War era legends, he was remembered at memorial services led by Rev. Smith at Lindbloom Chapel. Interment followed in Henry City Cemetery.
