A farm tour detailed terrace construction and furrow opener tests on the Bracken and Wherry farms. Observers noted soil profiles, topsoil depth, erosion control, and alfalfa stands with terraces stabilizing pastures while experts discussed limestone and nitrogen effects on yields.
Mack Evans a longtime Lostant resident died Tuesday September 24 at his home after a yearlong illness. Born April 15 1864 near Magnolia he was the son of Russell and Mrs Evans and lived in the Lostant area all his life. He married Elizabeth Schmitt of Eagle Township February 24 1891 and they had six children James of Peoria John Richard Evans Bertha Hickenbottom Grace Carr Caroline McCloskey and Ray Evans plus ten grandchildren. A requiem mass was held September 26 at St John s Church Lostant with burial in St John s Cemetery.
Marshall and Putnam counties expect to avoid new steel bin orders as the corn market and river shipping support existing storage. Corn movement near 60 to 62 cents has kept grain flowing, with resealing on farms rising, and new elevator storage at Toluca Minonk Lacon and Henry adding capacity.
At the annual meeting in Princeton, Illinois Valley Electric Cooperative reelected the same board for its first year anew. Officers Perley D. Warner of Kewanee remains president, L F Boyle of Hennepin vice president, Edi Kays of Ottawa secretary, Glenn Olsson of Wyanet treasurer. Directors include Slingsby Utica Nye Tiskilwa Funk Ottawa Bliss Buda Cardiff Galva Seamark Naffziger Princeton with Seamark as project superintendent in the final count.
A public auction scheduled at Ro Island Stock Yard Henry II on Timesday October 15. Calves totaling 1000 Angus head will be offered by Dauber of Henry. The sale begins at 7 o clock.
A post mortem on the Bracken farm north 80 acres shows erosion has buried 28 inches of good topsoil with soil washed from the slope above. Conservationist Lyle Coolidge samples the mound as a demonstration for a Putnam watershed tour sponsored by the Soil Conservation Service Henry CCC Camp and Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau.
The Magnolia WLS home talent show opened Wednesday in the Magnolia High School gym to a large audience. The program featured Phil Kolar as master of ceremonies with W. D. Cameron and Jim Bickerman as Honey Boy, plus performances by the Western Ramblers, Grace Wilson portrayal, Shirley Dittle on accordion, and other acts. Two more shows are planned at 8 o'clock in the Magnolia gymnasium, sponsored by the Magnolia Community Church Men’s Bible Class.
Camp Henry inspects and ratings praise the camp, new photography equipment arrives, and a September conference of educational advisers is held. Wedding gift from staff to Clet Edwards noted. Local residents visit Peoria and attend jalopy races and theater. Visits from the Kellys and Gun family mark a weekend, with Lt and Mrs Devine returning from Dallas. District baseball tournament planned in Decatur by Co. L Redd.
Henry residents are invited to invest in a planned Henry bank proposed by K Layne and L Graham. They seek $67 500 total capital and have the support of the local Lions Club, aiming to start a permanent Henry bank once stock is raised.
The death of Adolph Wagner after a weeklong illness due to complications from stones occurred in Gary Indiana. Born December 28 1876 in Strausberg Alsace Lorraine he married Gertrude Thomas in 1918 and lived in Gary and Lockport before moving to Henry with his wife. Funeral services were held at St Marys Church with Requiem Mass and Calvary Cemetery burial.
Three Whitefield residents are jailed in Lacon on theft related charges. John Estes faces concealment of a bicycle stolen from Henry boy Robert Duane Hoff, while son-in-law Herschel Burton also faces the same charge and additional chicken stealing counts. Ray mond Estes is delinquent and may be sent to an industrial school. Burton’s trial is set for Oct. 3 with Marshall County’s O B Pace as his defense.
A laying ceremony marked the corner of the new Varna Township High School as Hokanson & Isroom of Rockford and Dr J P Johnson spoke. Ministers from three Varna churches led prayers and community leaders praised the project's progress and democratic value.
1868 women from Marshall Putnam Bureau Peoria Stark and Tazewell counties met at the Congregational Church in Spring Valley for the district federation Fall council. Speeches by Senator Thomas P. Gunning and Everett Dirksen outlined legislative process and civil service topics. A varied program included music by Miss Ada Kreider and a forum on citizenship and child aid. The Henry Woman's Club plans an October 11 12 13 gymnasium event and Dr Schwarz will address America a Continent in Danger.
A large group will meet at the Saratoga Church for the annual Ladies Aid fried chicken supper tonight. Serving starts at 6 30 o clock with chicken and other food promised.
