The 27.6 mile Morris to Lockport segment extends the Lakes to the Gulf waterway to within 36.1 miles of the Chicago river mouth. Marshall County Supervisors Meet in Lacon for 1934 Session
The Marshall county board of supervisors met in Lacon in a one day quarterly session led by Chairman L B Phillips. They audited and approved bills. George A Wiley was re hired as county farm superintendent for two years while William Dunn retained as court house janitor. The liquor control commissioner reported locations selling liquor outside towns. The 1934 tax levy was set at about 40 000 dollars equal to 25 cents per 100 dollars value. The meeting adjourned with no further sessions planned until December.

Illinois official J E Houston dies in Macomb crash
J Earle Houston assistant attorney general and Democratic state central committeeman died after a car crash near Macomb. Two state employees, John W Kasserman and Harry Herring, were seriously injured. Governor Henry Horner notified and visited the hospital. The accident occurred when the Houston car swerved to avoid an unlit vehicle and struck a second car. Houston had long been active in Illinois politics and law, survived by a widow, stepdaughter, granddaughter and four sisters.

Fire damages wash house at Magnolia Farm
A fire at Elmer Smith’s Magnolia Farm three and a half miles west of Magnolia destroyed the wash house after being discovered by Mrs. Smith as rural carrier Mr Weber passed by. Neighbors helped extinguish the blaze, preventing further loss to the home and outbuildings. The blaze is believed caused by a defective flue.
