Betty Calder Jane Pringle Duane Jury and William Babington Jr left Thursday to attend Macomb College of Teachers. Parents Mr and Mrs Pringle Wallace Calder drove Sunday to drop off essential items as the graduates begin housekeeping for the new school year.
Sdra Ruth Marland, a niece of Mrs. R. H. Christman, rode her pony in the Bradford Fair last week. The judges awarded a Blue Ribbon for best pony and rider and a Red Ribbon for second place as best girl rider amidst strong competition from many ponies and riders.
Mr and Mrs W T Smith of Nayette town stopped Sunday afternoon at the homes of Mr and Mrs EL Royce and D R and Delia Taylor. Thirty years ago Smith was Sparland school principal and is now president of a small college in Fayette. They were returning from Bloomington after attending an inauguration at Wesleyan University in Iowa.
Mrs John Jury and Mrs Val Wenk co hosted a parcel post shower for Mrs Marton Kenewska of Goose Creek Oklahoma at Mrs Wenk s home in Lacon Tuesday evening The gathering featured unwrapped gifts later wrapped for sending to the bride aided by a guest list of local ladies and refreshments served at close of the event.
Mrs. A. J. Kehlenbach hosted the Birthday Club gathering on Friday evening. After greetings, games were played with results naming Mrs. Henry Jawksaworth high, Mrs. W. S. Suddett second, and Mrs. Charles Bishop low. Miss Fugenta Scoon attended, while Mrs. Anna Madison was absent.
Navy seaman Lyle Anderson currently in Seattle Washington after a stay in Sitka Alaska. He has served aboard ships and is part of routine movement along Pacific coast stations during his duty.
Lane Crawford and others from Lacon Chillicothe and Bloomington toured Lake Bloomington Sunday with Herman Lesher as a guest. The day was pleasant and the meal generous. The Helping Hand Society of the Baptist Church met at Mrs. Jessie Barnes’s country home with Mrs. Yolice Babington presiding. Officers elected include President Sadie Babington Vice President Electa Frise Secretary Bertha Moore May Osborne Treasurer Mary Russell Missionary President Mary Russell. Guests included Mrs. Labbie Smith Mrs. Charles Bergantz and Mrs. Reece. Mrs. A G Cumming chaired the entertaining group.
Sunday, Sept. 29, is the home-coming and rally day program. All Sunday School members are asked to attend the services. Rev Ward, just home from conference, will lead the unified service Sunday morning. A teachers and officers meeting is planned for Sunday evening at 15 Daylight Saving Time, with officer election as a feature. Friends may attend. services for Sunday, Sept. 22, 10:00 am unified service hour. 30 p.m league meeting.
Sparland Baptist Church featured Mr Furrh in Sunday's morning sermon on The Church and what it stands for. Mrs Klein and Mr Furrh sang duets, with The Old Rugged Cross performed by Mr Smith and Richard McLaughlin. Evening sermon from Ruth chapter one followed by a solo by Mr Klein. Next Sunday services listed with Sunday School at 9:45, worship 11, BYP at 7, and evening service at 8.
Mrs Val Wenk hosted the Birthday Rook Club with members including Mrs Ina Van Antwerp and Mrs Hazel Berner. Guests featured Mabelle Osborne Hula Hoskins Nell Thomas and Edna Riddell among others. A bridal gift set of sheds and pillow cases will be sent to new Mrs Marion Kenewske in Oklahoma by parcel post.
George Kear formerly of Sparland died at his home in Licon early Monday. The body rested at A Gebr funeral home before being returned to his home for a Wednesday funeral at 2 30 p m conducted by Rev Ward of the Sparland Methodist Church. He was buried beside his wife in Byutland Cemetery.
Nw ois McCartney returns home Saturday after absence while visiting Canada to attend farm interests. He notes a major issue is grain cannot be moved without a permit and urges Canada to support the United States in standing by to help.
Delegates to the meeting were selected with sessions starting at 6 50 and a banquet. Mrs Ha Bee remains chairman with Mrs Ivan Anderson as vice chairman and Mrs Bessie Jacobs as secretary. Eleanor Hugsell spoke and a home bureau lesson on personality was given by Miss Gordon. The annual meeting is set for Sept 27 at the Methodist Church in Henry and a jury school for art is planned.

Fifth grade wrote stories about an imaginary trip to the South Pole with Admiral Byrd while sixth graders pretended they were on a hunting expedition in Africa.

The Henry City Council approves an annual appropriation ordinance for the fiscal year starting May 1, 1940, totaling 15600 dollars including 1520 from non tax sources, published August 22, 1940.
