Secretary G A Phillips reports receipts are incomplete due to rain and delayed bill submissions. Net figures are far below last year with totals from the amphitheatre, concessions, entries, and rain insurance itemized, while expenses for harness and running races bands and games consume much of the funds.
A group interested in starting an independent football team will meet with Geo Heininger in the pavilion Sunday at two o'clock to discuss the possibilities this fall.
A 22 foot mahogany motor launch powered by an automobile engine was found adrift at the head of Swan Lake last week by Walter Miller and Frank Woods. The wear on the tie rope caused the boat to drift. Registry number S-1997. It was secured at the Swan Lake dock awaiting the owner, notified through the marine register.
Mesdames J. J. Green and Frank Dwyer hosted a farewell for their daughters Winifred Green and Veronica Dwyer. About 24 guests gathered at the Knights of Columbus hall after 8:15 for games and dancing. Cakes and ice cream were served as gifts were presented to the honor guests.
A Chicago Tribune snippet praises Hennepin Illinois as a treasure for antique hunting despite lacking rail, river, or tourism. It notes Lincoln spoke there in 1839, old Windsor chairs hiding in attics, and a tale of Doc Hartman chasing a spindle bed and a comb-back Windsor, with plans to return with him as guide.
At a Sunday congregational meeting the Presbyterian church unanimously voted to extend a call to Rev William S Harold of Seaman Ohio to become pastor. If he accepts the assignment, he and his wife and five year old will assume charge October 1.
Jurors for Marshall County circuit court October term were drawn by county officials and will report on Tuesday October 5 with circuit court opening Monday October 4 under Judge T N Green. Names include Henry Ransom Walter Bayne Harold Bullington Curtis Lucas William Sleater Oscar Davis plus others from Whitefield Saratoga La Prairie Hopewell Richland Lacon Bell Plain Evans Bennington and Bennington area communities.
Thomas Sullivan, brother of Mrs Lott Sullivan, died at his Peoria residence after a two day illness. He was one of Peoria’s oldest citizens and longtime local businessman. Interment followed at St Mary’s cemetery in Peoria. Mrs Lott Sullivan attended the funeral.
The Ladies' Aid of the Presbyterian Church met in the church parlors on Wednesday afternoon. About twenty four members attended the business meeting followed by a social time. Refreshments were served by hostesses Mrs A B Smith and Miss Strawn.
A Marionville reader writes the Henry News Republic affirming the paper is great and different from others. He asks to keep the mailing list active for another year and signs his name as H. H. Smart with the date September 8, 1926.
Miss Winifred Green and Miss Veronica Dwyer travel to Chicago for a three year training course at St Anthony hospital. Green, youngest daughter of J J Green, is Henry high school class of 1925 graduate. Dwyer, daughter of Frank Dwyer, completed two years of high school.
A litter raised by Stanley Boyle from Turner Mills stock at Millway Farm McNabb won sixteen ribbons at the National Swine Show with top placings in open class Illinois classification and round-up futurity. The club member earned about $300 in prize money this fall.
Harold Morine was appointed yesterday by the Putnam county Board of Supervisors in Hennepin to serve as superintendent of highways. He succeeds William Chesney, whose death earlier this winter left Fred Buhn of Granville in charge of the office.
This week most of the girls and boys who were planning to attend the different universities left to settle down for their studies. Those who left include Mary Downey Mildred Shorts Margaret Glenn Helen Potter Gladys Bayne Dorothea Anderson Lola Kaiser and Frederick Potter.
The best calves on the Chicago market this year came from the M P Club display by Farm Bureau youth from two counties. They led in both individual prices and average on the world’s largest livestock market. Top calf shown by Joe Bumgarner of McNabb with prize-winning exhibit.
Last week’s races featured Rainfast winning the 2:24 trot with Bessie Allison second and Peter the Great third. Loletta the Great captured the 2:24 pace with Will second and Colonial Dan fourth. Della Todd won the 2:16 trot on Thursday, with Sid McCarren and Bessie Allison in second and eighth. In the 2:15, Worthy Boy led four of five heats to win, Lulu, Red Layburn and Jennie Todd following. Harry Wills won the 2:27 trot with Kentucky Queen US A and Esoff placing. M. P. running race saw Mary Queen first, Wild Cat second, Black Apple third, Lady B fourth. Mary Queen nosed under first, Hoosier Lill second, Princeville third, Joe Ish fourth.
The Illinois river is rising toward a record for any September, with the present stage about two feet below the spring crest. Continuous rains over months push water higher. up-river indicators show no crest soon. Much grain remains in fields and many acres in both counties have been abandoned. three to four weeks of warm sun are needed to protect corn from severe damage.
A movement to finish graveling the road to Red Town was carried in the supervisors meeting this week. About eight miles remain to improve the strip west from Henry into a near all year round road without concreting. This will aid travelers who contend with heavy mud in winter and spring.
Irma Kehlenbach of Sparland and Lindsey Owen of Washburn wed Saturday at Princeton in a quiet ceremony. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Kehlenbach, taught at Yankee Street and Whitefield schools. The groom works with Owen Construction and they plan to live in Washburn.
Joseph Stemas of Toluca faces trial for the September 21 killings of Sheriff Orville Litchfield and Toluca Night Watchman John Leonard. Proceedings will be in Lacan with a possible venue change request. Stemas has been jailed in Peoria since his Evanston capture.
Mr and Mrs A J Athay of Ontario California called at the homes of Richard Waughop and Ed Harney on their return from Detroit Michigan They formerly lived in Sparland where they owned a drug store.
On Sunday September 19 at Pastime Park Lacon the M P baseball team champions of Illinois and Indiana meet Princeton Tigers for the Little World Series central Illinois title. Lefty Barnes will start for M P and Fighting Red Williams hints at a strong Princeton pitcher. First pitch is at 2 30.
Marshall county supervisors vote to continue cattle testing for tuberculous disease in cooperation with another county. Supporters include Dr. R. S. Bayne Henry R. L. Waughop Robert Kelley Fred Arndt Ernest Crank C. W. Kemp and H. P. Jensen. Opponents are Wilbur Casey John Turnbull Frank Meredith Walter Burnett and Mr Iliff.
Funeral services were held for Robert Onyun of Lacon a brother of Charles Onyun of this city following a ten day illness. Survived by wife Pearl Shafer a daughter one brother Charles and two sisters Mrs Alfred Taylor and Mrs Fred Miller. He was a member of Masonic and K of P lodges with services led by the Masons.
Friday morning Floyd Bogner slipped while playing with other boys and fell. Another boy landed on him, breaking his arm. He was taken to a doctor and his arm was set. he is recovering as well as can be expected.
An interesting meeting of the Fidelity Class of the Methodist church was held in the church parlors Friday evening as a school party. Games and contests recalled old school days, lunches were packed in little buckets, and candy sticks were given as favors. The committee in charge: Mrs. Wm. Downey, Miss Carrie Anderson, Mrs. Wm. Ransom, Mrs. Herbert Doyle, and Mrs. J. E. Carlson.
The Knights of Columbus picnic, postponed several times due to weather, has been called off for this year. A dance may be held later with prizes awarded then. decision pending after tonight's arrangement committee meeting.
Mrs. A B Smith visited Galesburg last week staying with Mr. and Mrs. John McAllister and their family during the stay.
Marshall-Putnam beats Princeton Tigers 5 to 0 as Lefty Barnes allows four hits and fans seven Tigers. Elzer matches with similar hit count while errors loom large for Princeton. Barnes also drives two runs and Wallace and Glenn score on errors, sealing the shutout after a shaky start.
