The Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Company submitted the lowest bid of 3273 524 for building a bridge over the Illinois River at Hennepin. Bids rose over time due to water levels, with completion likely at least a year away and favorable substructure conditions noted during this drought era.
The Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Company of Chicago won the contract to build the substructure for the Illinois River bridge at Hennepin. The bid totaled 273,524 dollars, the lowest of three bids. Henry Raffensperger, highway engineer, will oversee construction for the new span, which will include piers and anchoring, with work on approaches already advancing.
William E Bennington is introduced as the new coach of Henry Township High School. He arrives from Illinois State Normal University at Normal with a strong athletic record including football baseball and basketball letters. He expects a strong softball season this fall with three standout pitching candidates and many players showing aptitude for other roles.
The Henry Municipal Swimming Pool closed its most successful season with receipts of 526.70 and an estimated four to five thousand swimmers. July was the peak month. June showed a profit while August incurred a small deficit. Expenses totaled 310.67, yielding a 267.73 profit. Superintendent John Kraus and lifeguard Louis Henking led the operation under state supervision, highlighting the pool as a valuable community asset.
A new state horse pulling record was set Tuesday at the Marshall Putnam Fair when Idell Farms horses from the Cedar Plain area pulled 3 600 pounds in the heavy division, breaking their 3 500 pound mark. Art Morgan of Dahinda took second, W Weir of Lacon third, and Arthur Kehlenbach of Orland finished fourth. In the lightweight division William Ott of Williamsburg won with 3 000 pounds, Walter Morgan of Dahinda second, Kehlenbach of Sparland third, and Bob Burkey of Sparland fourth. A University of Illinois dynamometer measured the pulls.
The Hunter Lumber Company reports rapid progress on a new five room model home on Main Street Henry. The project, the first under the Federal Housing Administration in Henry and nearby towns, aims for occupancy in a few weeks with local plumbing wiring and heating by Henry firms. Mortgage plans with Henry Building and Loan Association include low down payment and monthly installments of about $19.03 on a $2 000 loan.
A new sawmill started Monday in Henry at the Folks Brothers site on Front Street. Elza Turpin and Fred Clarence own and operate the venture leasing the Folk mill building. They install sawing and planing gear to produce egg cases and chicken coops, with a steam engine and buzz saw in use.
A strong entry list and fast times highlighted the Mar shall Putnam Fair racetrack on Wednesday. Marguerite Silk owned by Judge Stevens of Galesburg won the opening heat and overall first money in the first race. Calumet Cassidy owned by Shelton McGrath of Peoria led late in the program’s 2 18 trot to take first money for Sundberg as trainer, with Betty Harvester owned by W Edwards of Toulon taking second. Vanda driven by M Harris of Henry captured the Revenge trot top purse, while Mary Pumkin owned by William Othman of Springfield challenged. Old Nick ridden by C Daumbaul of Kewanee won the five-eighths mile running race.
Republican and Democratic days at the Marshall Putnam Fair featured speakers for key races. U S senator candidate Glenn spoke alongside Arthur Bidwill Joe Anderson Clinton Searle and Everett Dirksen. Democratic speakers included Charles Dickman FE Champion Jacob Cantlin and Charles P Gregg focusing on Mar shall County State's Attorney and congressional contests.
Mrs Irving Hodge died at 12 50 PM Wednesday at her home three miles west of Henry after a lingering illness. She was born August 1 188 in Woodford county and married to Irving Hodge on March 6 1907. Surviving are her husband eight children three sons and five daughters, four grandchildren and several siblings. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon from the home and Putnam Christian Church with burial in Putnam cemetery.
The final debt on the El Paso amphitheatre moved to Marshall Putnam Fairgrounds in 1931 is set to be paid within days. A 30 to 40 farmer crew moved the horse barn and a contractor team moved the amphitheatre to Henry, with total relocation costs around $4,000. The fair aims to be debt free, enabling broader plans for future events. The El Paso Fair previously carried $15,000 debt and later sold the amphitheatre for $500, a loss cited by locals.
The 15th annual Marshall Putnam Fair concludes tomorrow with a sensational racing program featuring a 2:18 trot for 200 dollars and a free-for-all trot with 200 dollars. The Derby offers 160 dollars, and festival events include a 1 PM concert by the Toluca Venona Band, Sepiatone Follies in front of the amphitheatre, and an evening Toluca Wenona concert with a Sepiatone Follies revue by the Federal Theatre Unit featuring over 60 dancers. The fair showcases record horse numbers and expanded commercial exhibits with higher premium awards this year.
Henry Township schools show 852 pupils with 137 in the high school and 216 in grade schools. First grade lists boys and girls with named students. detailed counts by grade appear in the superintendent Roy Steele announcement.
The Marshall County Board of Supervisors met in regular semiannual session at the court house in Lacon. The county levy for the coming year was set. George A Wiley of Spaind was re elected as superintendent of the county farm for two years from Dec 1. William Dunn was chosen court house janitor for one year. The board completed routine business and adjourned after one day.
Mrs Hazel Bowman Diszak owner and manager of the O Hazels Pavilion on Route 89 south of McNabb announces a regular fall and winter schedule of dances every Saturday and Sunday. Saturday features old time and modern dancing while Sunday offers modern dancing. An unusual 10 cent dance night will be held with Eddie Puetz and his orchestra providing music. Ample parking is available for patrons.
