A 18th district senator is slated to speak at a Wit Round Table gathering in Illinois. The event on September 10 includes remarks on Abraham Lincoln Day and a Chicago air show. Nearby figures and education ties are noted among attendees.
Rev. Marshall W. Simpson, pastor at Henry and LaPrairie United Presbyterian churches, earned a fourth award from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, including a public address honor and five medals since 1957. His July 4 1965 sermon adapted Rudyard Kipling’s Recessional, praising American heritage and individual rights under a constitutional government.
John Alden Hunter 43 died from a car truck collision on Rt 64 near Lanark Illinois. Funeral services were held at Green and Child Funeral Home Henry Illinois with burial at Henry Cemetery and Legion honors. Surviving family includes wife Joan Chesney and five children. He served in Army Aviation Engineers 1942 45 and was a Knox College alumnus. Edward Zukosky plans a Europe trip funded by the Illinois State Bar Association.
Edwin A. Booth is named Vice President Sales Central Operations at Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp effective September 1. He succeeds Charles M. Merritt who retires August 31 after 29 years. Booth, formerly General Manager of Sales Administration, has 37 years in the steel industry and will report to John E. Timberlake.
Byron O. Cully of Freeport and District 642 governor met Varna Rotary Club leaders President Kenneth Holmstrom and Secretary Inez Peterson on August 30. He spoke on Rotary's 1966 67 theme A Better World Through Knowledge and urged adding members, forming new clubs, serving youth, and promoting international Rotary in scope. Chuck Potter from Lacon joined as visiting Rotarian. Streator members William Wright and Clarence Johnston attended with their Rotaryanne. Guest pianist Joe Kidd also appeared.
Richard Ashdown son of Mrs Dorothy Ashdown and the late Arnold Ashdown left from St Louis Airport for Tripoli Libya where he will teach Industrial Arts at Wheelus Air Force Base High School He holds a MS in Education from University of Illinois and a BS from Illinois State University He previously taught in Ellsworth and served as assistant principal of a junior high
Charles Brizgis purchases the Elizabeth Gaus estate of 80 acres located three miles west of Lostant for 807 per acre. Brizgis, a Magnolia area farmer, will farm the land. the home will be occupied by the Dick Galvas family of Saginaw Michigan. He will manage the Wickes Corporation about three miles south of Tonica.
The Sparland Lions Club invites new members with charter set for September 10. Interested individuals should contact secretary Eugene Manock. Charter Night Banquet scheduled for September 17 at 6:30 PM at the high school with a program to be announced later.
Albert William Hufnagel 80 died Sunday at Kewanee Public Hospital He was a farmer longtime resident of Whitefield and Bradford areas Born Sept 16 1885 Geneseo Illinois he married Nora Baker in 1909 and Marguerite Johnson in 1955 Survived by two sons Leonard and Leo both of Henry a stepdaughter Mrs Charles Hallock Peoria a brother Henry Hufnagel a sister Mrs Laura Longman four grandchildren two step grandchildren and other relatives Funeral services were set for 2 pm Wednesday at Dunlap Funeral Home Bradford with Rev Edward Pinder officiating Burial followed at Henry Cemetery.
Wenona writer Mrs Hattie Smith marks 47 years sending news and stories to papers across Varna Toluca Lacon Wenona Sheffield and Peoria. She helped organize P T A groups in Varna and Toluca and contributed to Red Cross work and War Service Club records.
George A Hormel & Co announces postponement of planned sewer disposal facilities for the new Bureau Illinois slaughtering plant. R F Gray chairman cites high construction costs and shortages of skilled workers plus high interest rates as reasons for the delay.
Sgt First Class Henry Howard Upton 32 former Joplin resident died August 20 1966 in Darmstadt Germany after lightning struck his field telephone switchboard. He was born August 8 1934 in Riverside California and served 11 years in the Army. He is survived by his widow Gerda three children his mother Ora Upton a brother Lt Col Clifford A Upton and many relatives. Funeral services were August 22 at Thornhill Dillon Mortuary Chapel with Army honors and burial at Osborne Memorial Cemetery in Joplin.
Mayor Jarin Belsley led a regular meeting with all members present. The council approved buying a 33 foot flag pole for 238 dollars to be erected at city hall and allocated 400 dollars from the city band fund to the Old Settlers committee. State approval was received to close Fifth Street from Main to Prairie on Saturday September 10 for Old Settlers events.
Mrs. J. E. Raffensperger, librarian of the Henry Public Library, attends a meeting of the Pete Marquette Librarian's Association in Peoria Heights Library. The Illinois Valley System with 22 libraries focuses on inter library loans and service streamlining. Films are available to Henry schools and groups at no cost via the Henry Library.

Marshal Boyle of Henry served as a Polled Shorthorn judge in the beef division of the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis last week.
A caretaker discovered an attempt to set fire in the main alley of a fair grounds horse barn Sunday evening. The fire burned out before spreading to hay and horses, and the Lacan sheriff's office offers help in pursuing the vandals, with horsemen able to identify suspects. The owner will press charges to the limit.
Mrs Otto Mangold, 04, of rural Henry was a passenger in a two car collision at West Armstrong avenue and North Bigelow street Peoria at 12 55 p m Friday. Judy A Green 20 of Peoria drove into the intersection after a stop sign and Mangold hit the right front side she was treated for a head cut requiring three stitches and a bruised knee at Proctor hospital and released. She is the mother of Mrs Roland Kruger Camp Grove.
The city of Lacon gains state and federal approval to build a $75,000 harbor on the south side of the Illinois River Bridge. Financing comes from the Illinois Department of Conservation. Construction is by the city with a Conservation Department supervisor on site.
