John Alden Hunter son of Mr and Mrs Alden Hunter of this city returned last week from a five week voyage in the Caribbean aboard the U S Ship Minquas The vessel sailed from Miami July 21 with a cargo of lumber cement and other materials bound for Port of Spain Trinidad On the trip the ship dropped off supplies for U S air bases in the region where workers are hired at around 100 dollars a week for tractor work Several congressmen on the Orion accompanied the voyage home John lost fifteen pounds during the trip He is a Morgan Park Military School graduate and plans to enroll at Knox College in Galesburg this fall

Granville woodchopper Louis Ernat set a state record at the Illinois Farm Sports Festival in Champaign Urbana by cutting an eight inch log in a preliminary trial in the fastest time yet at the event. In the regular contest he split a ten inch log in one minute 13.2 seconds while representing Marshall and Putnam counties. Ernat, noted for his polished attire and finishing work, followed last year’s title with another record run.
