Mrs. George Nicholson an early settler of the community died Thursday at 82 years, after a brief illness. Survived by three daughters and three grandchildren, funeral Sunday at 3 p.m. conducted by Rev. P. M. Cooper with visiting relatives from Chicago Joliet and Peoria.

In Whitefield two 19 year olds Alden Snyder and Edwin Rickey husk corn amid muddy fields. They harvest up to 170 bushels per day with 20 bushels per hour and average 75 bushels per acre on a 15 acre field. Carl Barker’s corn averages 70 bushels per acre in Burkeau county. S. A. Snyder’s 15 acre plot yields 92 bushels.

Anthracite Freight Rates Upheld by Interstate Commission
Local coal dealer A J Lindgren had objected to proposed anthracite rate hikes from Pennsylvania points to Sparland Henry and Lacon but the Interstate Commerce Commission dismissed the complaint. The new schedule raises Sparland rates to 7.92 a ton with Pennsylvanian coal, boosting car mile earnings and delivered coal price by about one dollar per ton. Lindgren warned oil burner uptake if rates rise and urged rate alignment to protect Sparland and Henry dealers from Lacon competition.

Annual Winter Concert Planned by Henry Band
The Henry Municipal Band schedules its annual mid winter concert for Thursday evening December 10. A chorus of twenty from local schools rehearses with new pieces and soloists. The program includes three movies a 7 reel feature Wild Wild Susan plus news and comedy reels. Whether Red Williams will reprise the Hary Lauder role remains secret. Thresia Anna Mattern born July 27 1865 died Saturday November 14 in St Marys hospital La Salle. Requiem high mass at Mt Palatine Immaculate Conception Church with Fr Zwart officiating. Bureau Viaduct Agreed Upon Bridges at Bureau Junction
After months of delay the War Department and the State of Illinois reached a satisfactory agreement on a new bridge and viaduct at Bureau Junction to carry the Rock Island line. The government will pay for a bridge equal in cost to the old one and the state will cover the remainder. The structure will reconnect a hard road link and replace the canal span washed away by floods last August. The rail company’s share was not specified in the announcement.

Achievement Day Brings County Farm Club Members Gathered

Sheriff raids poker game in Lacon
A midnight raid by Sheriff Whittaker on a room above Friday and Heininger in Lacon found a poker game in progress with nine men present. Chips, 18 decks of cards and equipment were seized. no money was seen. A warrant was issued for George Hdeinanger and his hearing moved to Friday.
