Memorial Services for Henry Downey Held May Members Remembered
Memorial services were held May 21 at the Methodist Church for First Lt. Henry Downey a bomber pilot killed in action in 1944. Born February 24 in Putnam Illinois he rose from local schools to Bradley University and joined the Army Air Forces in 1941. He trained at Fort Bliss and in 1942 earned cadet wings and a commission, flying missions from England. He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart posthumously. Relatives and many servicemen attended the service, with Rev Donald Lemkau delivering the memorial address assisted by Rev Wilburn Powell. Burial followed at Hajen Cemetery with church and cemetery honors arranged by O.P. Child.

Governor Dwight H. Green convened a Friday special session of the Illinois General Assembly to consider a proposed state soldiers bonus. The plan, based on the Illinois Veterans Compensation Commission findings, would pay 10 per month of service from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945, with minimums of 50 and up to 900 for heirs of those who died in service. The commission estimates about 915,000 eligible, 17,000 fatal casualties, total cost near 85 million dollars, and a referendum next November.
