Swaney swept seven possible firsts at the Twelfth Annual Putnam County Literary Meet, held before a capacity crowd in Swaney gym. Hennepin was close behind with 60 points, Magnolia 45, and Hopkins 40. The meet featured tight races in every event and a record crowd praised the high quality of work.
Fifty years ago this week Mr and Mrs John M Williams of Putnam united in marriage. The Williams family gathered at their home Tuesday for a reception honoring their golden wedding anniversary. Williams has served as justice of the peace for 30 years and remains an active community member despite age. Relatives and friends filled the home with gifts and memories as the couple marked the milestone with piano and vocal performances by local residents.
The Baccalaureate address will be delivered by Rev Fr Schauer of St Marys Church. Services will be held at the opera house Sunday afternoon. The program includes the Grade School Orchestra performing America with invocation by Rev Amen and Benediction by Rev Gibbons.
Monday evening the Henry High School commencement exercises will be held at the opera house at 8 o clock. Dean Clar of the University of Illinois will give the address. School Orchestra under TAC Music Orchestra will provide music with Rev Wa TAC as invocation. Sher man Littler to present diplomas. Benediction by Rev M J Brennan.
At the last meeting the City Council moved to discuss the community building project at the next session. The council then voted on the appropriation and a two mill tax levy of about 1600 dollars for the coming year to support the project. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday evening June 7.
Marshall county circuit court convened Monday with fourteen new and 189 old cases. Judge Sevens R Baker of Pontiac was appointed due to Judge Miles illness. Twenty four old criminal cases continued. 39 old and six new law cases. 76 old and eight new chancery cases. Four of the eight new chancery cases are divorce bills. Two are partition suits. One is a petition and another Venona and East Venons. Building and Loan Association v Ruth Ireda et al is a bill to foreclose mortgage.
Eighth grade commencement for nine schools will be held Friday May 28 at 2 30 PM in the opera house. Programs include piano violin cornet glyophone solos recitations and performances by the Henry Eighth Grade orchestra and class songs. Rev W J Corpenter will give the address and County Supt W E King will award diplomas. County colors purple and gold class flower red rose class motto grit wins.
Merchants in Varna found outlets broken into after night robbery attempts. Olson & Extrem general merchandise lost loose change and candy. intruders entered via rear door with smashed glass. Roy May heard the crash from above and caused the thieves to flee. A similar break-in was reported at a La Rose store the same night.
Mrs B F Ransom of Magnolia township died Sunday May 23 after months of heart trouble. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1 pm from the home with Rev W J Carpenter officiating. She was married in 1875 to Benjamin F Ransom and leaves ten children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. The Women's Relief Corps had charge of the services.
The annual closing exercises will be held in the school hall at 2:80 Tuesday June 11 with pupils Eugene Kuss Robert Bogner Gerald Sendelbach Edwin Glatz Marie Barth Celestine Ziegler and Dorothy Mae Etscheid. Rev A Schauer will present diplomas after a pupil program. All are invited.
Henry residents join the American Legion the W A C and school children in a 1 30 PM parade from city hall to the bridge led by the Henry Municipal Band The program includes prayers songs and a flower casting on water by veterans and students at the bridge and cemetery rites at City Cemetery featuring an address by W W Bentler with flag salute benediction and taps followed by grave decorating by American Legion members
Wood reports E P Imboden a Decatur cattle owner will headline the Farm Bureau auto tour next Tuesday. The 40 mile route visits about twenty west side locations with livestock as the main feature and other topics. Tourists meet at the Elmer Quinn farm at 9 am and are asked to bring lunch.
Mr. Eagan of Quincy arrived Monday for a visit with his daughter Mrs Lloyd Hunter and her family.
In a rainy Putnam County meet at Swaney, Hopkins led most events but Swaney countered with wins in the later races. New county records were set by Stehl in shot put 41 ft 2 in and Strack in broad jump 20 ft 11.5 in. Johnston cleared 11 ft 4.5 in in pole vault.
A large track and field event is set for Friday May 28 at Henry Fair Grounds featuring about 200 athletes from six surrounding counties. Schools represented include Chillicothe Lostant Granville Swaney Magnolia Toluca Wyoming Hennepin La Rose Lacon Henry Sparland Bradford and Tiskilwa. Local citizens are urged to support and help make it an annual affair.
Memorial Sunday services will be held at the Dresbytérien church at 11 o clock. Opening prayer by Rev W J Carpenter Christian minister. The main address by Rev W Ross Gibbons pastor of the Presbyterian church. Benediction by Rev James W Turner Methodist minister. Music to be provided by the Presbyterian choir.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 30 for Miss Elise Helper who died May 19 at her Thomas street home after nine months of heart disease. A long educator and journalist, she taught forty years in several districts and later worked at The Henry Times before retirement. Relatives from Chicago Mt. Pulaski Bureau and Peoria attended. Miss Helper was active in St John Episcopal church and Red Cross during WWI.
The Municipal swimming pool will open its fourth season on Saturday May 29. The pool has fresh paint on the bottom and sides and a new drain added to the children’s pool. No manager for the season has been decided yet.
Friday evening Miss Corrine Newhalfen entertained friends at her home. Two tables played 500 with Miss Gertrude Konrad winning first prize and Miss Irene Hofer the consolation. Guests received engagement announcements for Miss Corrine and John Burkhardt of Chillicothe. wedding planned for September. Mr Burkhardt is the son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Burkhardt of Peoria.
Raymond Hunt Robert Schewe Helen Onyan Donald Bartsch and Edwin Barry have the mumps, according to the latest local health bulletin. The report lists five names afflicted with the illness as health officials monitor potential spread.
Wenona edged Marshall County rival by a single point at Wenona in a close track contest. Lacon Toluca Sparland and Henry placed, with Wenona scoring 31 points to Toluca 30 as Henry led in sprint events and Wilfred Wright dominated the grade meet.
