Neighbors in McNabb rallied to aid Andrew Harris who was hospitalized after a steel piece pierced his eye at his farm. Nineteen farmers with tractors finished discing and planting while three organizers led the effort.
Norris Elmer Root, 71, a former Canyon Texas and LaPrairie Illinois resident, died after a heart attack Friday afternoon at Methodist hospital Peoria. Funeral services were held Monday at LaPrairie Methodist Church with interment in Dreamland cemetery Canyon Texas. Survivors include seven children and 25 grandchildren.
Leo Smith, commander of Henry Post 323 American Legion, said plans are set for the Memorial Day parade. The march forms at the American Legion hall and starts at 2 p.m. Sunday May 30, going to Henry bridge for Navy dead ceremony, then to Henry Cemetery. Participants include the American Legion auxiliary Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Cub Scouts and Henry Senachwine high school band.
In observance of Memorial Day the Henry post office will be closed all day Monday May 30 with no window service or rural or city delivery, Postmaster L J Ries announced Tuesday.
Magnolia Post 254 of the American Legion honored charter members and 25 year veterans at a chicken supper marking the post 35th anniversary. Special recognitions went to Paul Rehn and Harold Griffith for 35 years of continuous membership.
Mrs Joseph Ash presided as DAR Regent during a Christopher Lobingier chapter gathering at Mrs Charles Dawson's home after a dessert luncheon at Hayline's. The Henry Senachwine P-TA met May 19 in the Henry grade school assembly room to close the 1953 54 year. Mrs Verne Akright opened with the pledge. Officers for next year were elected with John Nordstrom named president and Mrs Joseph Ash vice president.
Fire chief cites Illinois Attorney General opinion declaring retail sale of sparklers illegal under the Fireworks Act. The rule prohibits retail offering or sale of fireworks producing audible or visual effects and forbids use or explosion of items including blank cartridges and rockets.
Governor Stratton announces a statewide contest to choose a king and a queen for Children's Day activities at the Illinois State Fair. Eligible ages are seven to fifteen.
Henry Senachwine high school athletic director Harry Campney spoke to the Henry Rotary Club urging a well rounded program beyond varsity sports. He defined fitness as the ability to handle one’s body and work hard, noting rural students often lag in physical condition. He called for individualized testing and training while continuing group activities, and cited studies showing group games rarely improve fitness.
Robert V. Dewey of Henry receives a gold pin from the United States Treasury Savings Bond Division for years of service as chairman of the war defense and savings bond sales programs in Marshall and Putnam counties. Gerry C. Scott succeeds him as chairman and both counties are praised for strong bond purchases, with Marshall County reaching over 70 percent of its 1954 quota in early 1958 and Putnam over 70 percent as well.
The Henry township American Legion Auxiliary reports $373 collected for the 1984 cancer drive, slightly below last year. Donations can be left at the Fairbanks building with Mrs Wosik, who thanks members and contributors including numerous local women and helpers.
