An article urges observance of Poppy Day on Saturday May 28 in memory of World War I dead and as support for living veterans. It describes handmade poppies crafted by disabled veterans in government hospitals and Auxiliary workshops, each with its own story and contribution to families in need.
Miss Louise Hoscheidt daughter of Mr and Mrs EB J Hoscheidt of this city will graduate with highest honors in the 1932 class at St Marys Academy of Notre Dame. She is valedictorian and will receive her diploma next Thursday evening June 2. The Rev Francis P Cavanaugh president of Notre Dame university will deliver the commencement address.
On Wednesday afternoon the Presbyterian manse hosted a lively missionary tea. Mrs. Cressey welcomed a large crowd and led a social hour with refreshments after the meeting. Mrs. A S Nichols and Mrs. Walter Bayne directed the program and meeting activities.
Putnam hosts Grand Ridge Eagles Sunday as the baseball squad debuts new players and uniforms. Fans are urged to attend and support the team on a big day in town hall venue events.
Henry High School held commencement exercises at the gymnasium Wednesday night marking the close of the public schools. Twenty one seniors received diplomas as Dr Walter Briggs of Decatur delivered the address The program included a saxophone number a vocal solo and chorus music. Class officers include Margaret McAllister president Carol Heininger vice president and Ethel Eckhoff secretary treasurer with Eckhoff salutatorian and Verla Schlosser valedictorian.
Twenty eighth graders graduated Monday at the Henry Gymnasium with a program directed by Hans A. Otto. The ceremony featured the unveiling of a George Washington Bicentennial memorial by Billy Wagner as Uncle Sam and Dona Lea Heninger as Miss Columbia. Rev. Roger F. Cressey gave the commencement address and diplomas were awarded by County Superintendent O. T. Stateler to St. Mary's and Henry Grade school graduates, listing the students by name.
Henry High School girls tennis teams defeated Granville last Tuesday afternoon at the school courts while the tri county track meet was underway at the fairgrounds. Helа Nor Monier won singles, and Maxine Applegate with Helen Duke won doubles.
Thirty five members of the Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau inspected the Union stockyards in Peoria on a Wednesday morning and later attended a luncheon at the Jefferson Hotel.

Mrs Ann Lucy Smiley voice teacher in Peoria presents a pupil recital at Henry gymnasium next Tuesday May 31 at 8 pm free admission. Performers include Florence Poshard Ardella Zimmerman Brown Martha Louis Merdian Lela Land Vera Henninger Lucile Smiley and others with Josephine Green Baker and Lucile Smiley as accompanists. Wayne Matheney a Smiley student recently engaged by the R K O vaudeville circuit tours the circuit.
Henry High School represented at the Illinois State Typing contest at the University of Illinois on May 7. Rita Waterous finished third in her class after winning district Wenona and sectional Pekin to reach the state meet.
A stag party and fish fry were hosted at Lacon Country Club last Friday evening May 13 in honor of Charles Onyun of Henry retiring after about 30 years with Public Service Co. He served as plant manager in Henry and received a pen desk set. I F Witt district manager spoke along with Onyun. about 36 people attended.
The annual grade school operetta was staged in the gym last Friday by grades three through eight. Elaborate costumes and clever numbers kept the audience engaged from start to finish. A preceding playlet Washington and the Indians supported the bicentennial theme. Cast included Henry Pagemiller as Washington Betty Roby as Martha Washington Betty Williams as Mammy Bud Hunt and Betty Metropolus as George Custis Nellie Custis. The mythic operetta centers on Boreas Old Sol Master Painter and Jack Frost facing Earthly cruelties as four Seasons depart. upon their return peace is restored. Youthful actors and singers showed notable talent drawing praise for both performance and teaching.

The United Charities of Chicago appeals for homes to host city children for short country outings. Everett M. Dirksen of Pekin Republican nominee for congressman from the sixteenth district will speak at Henry Memorial Day exercises on Monday May 30. The program, led by Henry Post 323 American Legion and Auxiliary, starts at 9 am with a parade to the Illinois river and graveside services at Henry City cemetery ending with flag salutes and grave decorations.
Henry high school seniors gathered in the gymnasium for a Sunday night service beginning at eight. Priscilla Knight led the processional, Rev. D. W. Madden offered invocation, and Dorothy and Leo Quinn sang. Fr. A. B. Cope preached on Religion and Life with practical daily impact. Miss Bess Bacon sang solo, and Fr. Andrew Schauer gave the benediction.
Thirty young men from Henry and nearby communities attended a stag party on the Harry Klein farm near Whitefield Tuesday evening. Bonfires lit the timber as old time music and a frontier quadrille were featured. refreshments included 30 pounds of weiners and 12 dozen buns for hot dogs. The group plans another similar event soon.
Members of Marshall county American Legion and Auxiliary plan a joint meeting at Henry K of C club rooms on Thursday June 2. Henry post No 323 will present an entertainment program with a speaker to be announced. The Henry Auxiliary unit will serve a banquet before the program followed by a dance as an added feature.
St Marys School plans a June 1 closing ceremony at Henry Deeday with a 14-number program and a class of six graduates. Speakers include Rev T E Shea and Rev A Schauer. graduates listed alongside performers and participants with grades, acts, and plays.
The Senachwine Alumni banquet at Putnam town hall on May 14 drew a record crowd with eighty one plates. President Maxine Murphy welcomed the class of 1932 and Neva Wherry gave the response. Officers for 1933 were elected led by Lara Wheeler with secretary Virginia Dauber and treasurer Elsie Wherry. Committees covered entertainment invitation and decoration with members including Mildred Longman Elizabeth Wheeler and Lloyd Murphy.
