Construction on Magnolia gap advances with dirt hauled from nearby sites. Contractors expect paving to begin soon as the new ring of the Magnolia junction improves traffic flow and supports the east west trunk route expansion benefiting area farms and local commerce.

The Rural Electrification Administration announced a $370000 grant to build 351 miles of line serving 72.1 customers in Bureau Henry and LaSalle counties with the Illinois Valley Electric Cooperative. Putnam County was excluded despite dense farm settlements and prior ties to the project.
The Hen High School alumni banquet will be held Monday night May 28 in the Farm Bureau building community room. Mrs. Howard Ash serves dinner at 6:30 with Jose Livek's orchestra providing music. The program features welcomes, reports, and alumni entertainment, with a memorial song for Mrs. Carrie M. Carpenter and a late evening social to midnight.
The Keegan and Nichols Barber Shops will close all day Tuesday May 30 and reopen Monday evening May 29, as announced by Ben R and George Nichols.
The Henry Township High School will honor 35 seniors at an 8 p.m. Friday May 26 commencement in the school gym. The program features the school band choir and a keynote by Dr Mortimer of Illinois Wesleyan University who heads the chemistry department at Illinois Wesleyan University Bloomington. Class roster includes Ellen Marie Barry Helen Louise Barry Ivan A Bergantz Dale E Hagie and many others.
Mrs Frank Wood died Sunday May 21 after a prolonged illness at the home of Mrs Miles Henkins. Born May 8 1854 in Le, she married Frank Wood in 1876 and had seven children. Services were held at Henry Christian Church with Rev C W Baughman officiating and interment in Henry City Cemetery. She was a long-time member of Putnam Christian Church and many out-of-town relatives attended.
A Henry Grade operetta performed by the Grade School comes to a close after a year of activities. The event featured carefully drilled costumes and polished performances by the students, earning high praise from the audience.
Henry grocery stores will close on Thursdays during the summer, with markets ringing June July and the first two weeks in September. Closing times are noted as 79 RO for the balance of the day.
NooThee Henry grocery stores and meat markets will close on Decoration Day Tuesday May 30. They state the holiday will cause openings to shift with all locations back open Thursday.
The city council on Monday night unanimously approved opening the second floor rest room at Henry City Hall as a ladies rest room to serve out of town shoppers. The big weekend crowd showed Henry’s thriving trade and growing facilities.
Jannie Fulkerson Lutes, 67, died May 23 after a stroke. Born July 15, 1872 near Bradford, she lived much of her life on farms in Saratoga Township before moving to Henry in 1920. She leaves children Otto, Ioan, and others, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, siblings, and a large extended family. Short services were held at home at 2 pm with a 2:30 pm church service at the Presbyterian Church in Henry. burial followed at Henry Cemetery.
The Henry American Legion Post 323 sponsors met Tuesday to expand plans for the annual Fourth of July event. Officials aim for wider promotion, including a cooperative ad with News-Republican and local businesses. Advertising will cover a 50 mile radius.
The 27th commencement of Senachwhine Community High will be at Putnan Town Hall at 8 p m Thursday. Senator Thomas P. Gunning of Princeton will deliver the address.
The city of Henry thanks Princeton officials led by Mayor Floyd Avery for lending a $13 000 Segraves fire truck and a driver to cover repairs on Henry’s disabled unit. James Moran of Princeton Fire Dept accompanied the truck to Henry and stayed at the Henry Hotel. The loan involves Princeton’s two large pumpers and a crew member to operate the truck capable of 750 gallons per minute.
Brief services were held at Sheffield Cemetery as the ashes of Mrs. W. W. Dewey were interred beside her late husband Reverend C. Carpenter. Born in Sheffield, she lived there until 1901, later moving to Henry then Peoria, and finally settling in San Diego. Attending included sons C. B. Dewey and H. H. Dewey, grandsons, and relatives from nearby towns.
