Waters Denounces Communist Influence in American Colleges

In a recent address, Waters claims communist control of the American Student Union and campaigns against alleged alien-directed influence. He warns Americans to distinguish their freedom from dictatorial regimes and urges vigilance against subversive activity at home.

Grain terminal upgrades at Lacon with new docks and bins

The Terminal Grain Company reports progress on remodeling the Lacon river harbor. Huffman Construction completes dredging to ten feet, a new dock and elevator extension, and concrete bins planned to raise capacity to 155000 bushels. The system will feed barges at 10000 bushels per hour.

Memorial Day Exercises Sponsored by Henry American Legion

The Henry Memorial Program plans a May 30 events starting at 9 am at the Legion Building. A parade proceeds to Henry High School to honor the holiday with short services led by the Woman's Relief Corps and the American Legion. Afterward, attendees march to Henry City Cemetery for taps and a firing squad salute as veterans' graves are decorated.

Baccalaureate Services Slated At Henry High May Evening

The 1940 Henry High School baccalaureate event is planned for Sunday in the school gym. Father Schauer and Father Rehanbe lead the service with music by the school orchestra and pieces like How Long Wilt Thou For. Principal Rey and Rev. Walter Ward are among speakers.

Alfred Carlson of Putnam Passes Away

Alfred Carlson, 75, of Putnam, died this morning at his sister Ida Leith's home. He lived with his sister and her son-in-law and daughter Dale Wright for many years. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Putnam Christian Church with Rev. Peters of Princeton officiating. C. Lindblom is in charge of arrangements.

Jalopy Auto Races Slated at Henry Sunday

The Central States Racing Association plans an afternoon of jalopy automobile races at the Marshall Putnam Fair Grounds in Montdii Henry on Sunday June 2 starting at 1 30 p m Central Standard Time Five races of 12 to 20 laps will be run on a quarter mile grass infield track Local drivers and entries from Henry LaSalle and surrounding towns are expected including Dynamite Bob Kurkowski of LaSalle and George Heininger of Henry who plans to drive a Schlitz Special Attention is on hand for 50 or more entries with prizes for drivers and spectators 25 cent child 40 cent adult grandstand free Admission details Crews check in at 1 30 p m with racing to begin at 2 p m Officials Bud Brookman and Albert Stickel are listed plus many Henry entrants expected

Automobile races at Henry on Sunday June 2

An entertainment novelty featuring old jalopy cars will be staged at the Marshall Putnam fair Grounds on Sunday June 2. Orin Turner and Joe McAllister sponsor the races driving a 1930s Oakland sport coupe owned by McDonna Chevrolet Company Henry. A track infield amphitheatre is being laid out for the event drawing entries from nearby cities and towns.

The 28th annual Senachwine Community High School commencement will be at Platnum Town Hall on Wednesday evening May 22 at 8. Valedictorian is Phyllis Read daughter of Charles and Mrs Read with a 91.937 average. She received the D A R award earlier in spring and has been a long time 4 H member active in leadership. James Downey son of William and Mrs Downey is salutatorian with an 86.062 average. He has seven years in 4 H and attends the Henry Methodist Church.

Varna Township High School announces William Quitam as valedictorian with a 1.09 index and Marvin Peterson as salutatorian with a 1.23 index. Quitam excels in music drama journalism and sports while Peterson leads in drama and wins scholarships and science prizes.

The Marshall County population data lists Toluca Sparland Wenona and Washburn with figures for 1940 and 1930. Several towns show detailed counts while Wenona and Washburn figures are not yet available and will be released later from Washington D C.

Henry Population Rises to 1874 Amid Census Update

Census supervisor Robert J. Phalen reports Henry's population at 1874 with 216 gain since 1930, not counting 200 CCC enrollees at Riviera Park. Miss Viola Forrest compiled the data. officials urge anyone missed to come forward as figures move toward Washington.

Former McNabb Resident Named Bank Director

Announcement reports L. S. Griffith of Amboy to serve as director of the Federal Land Bank of St. Louis representing the Northern Illinois territory. Griffith, son of the late W. G. Griffith, is a Swaney High School and University of Illinois College of Agriculture graduate who has been Lee County farm adviser and later secretary treasurer of the Lee County Farmers National Farm Loan Association.

Paper to be issued early on Memorial Day

Next Thursday May 30 is Memorial Day and readers are asked to have copy at the office as early as possible to expedite publication. The News-Republican plans to issue the paper at noon on Memorial Day rather than in the afternoon as usual.

McNabb and Swaney High Schools Approve Merger

Voters in McNabb and Swaney districts approve consolidation in a Wednesday referendum. McNabb tally 13 41 in favor with total votes near 154, Swaney 54 0 in favor. Plan ends McNabb High School and unites the territories with Swaney, plus potential future consolidation of grade schools.

Wild Turkeys Raised in Duke Timber As Experiment

W B Duke on Dry Hollow farm plans to reestablish wild turkeys in his timbered land. Dr J H Wagner imported three hens and a tom from Cottonwood D D in February to test nesting and incubation under hens and in incubators. Six of the seven chicks hatched from under a chicken hen survive, with a second chicken hen and turkey nest settings planned. The 640 acre tract will be protected with CCC-built fencing and no pasturing, as Miss Duke retires the land to woodland with evergreen planting and a water well for cabin use and wildlife.
