Board discussions reveal survey costs and potential $290,000 total for replacing the Varna High School building and equipment. Architects from Ur the cost to replace the ding and equipment could approach 290,000, with labor and material pressures making modernization difficult for small districts.

The Marshall County Airport Commission has contracted to buy T45 acres from the Broaddus estate east of Lacon for airport conversion. County supervisors must approve the deal with Marshall County funds, price and terms to be reviewed soon. State and Federal funds will cover improvements including runways, with negotiations ongoing in Springfield and attendance by local officials.
A. Johnson father of Mrs George Mathis and Mrs Don Chesnut Canton , passed away at his home in Canton Sunday morning. Funeral services were held at 2 o clock Tuesday afternoon in a neighborhood church with the Mathis family among the attendees.
The ashes of Eugene Hutchins son of the late Dr and Mrs A W Hutchins were interred at a Henry cemetery after a service at the LaGrange home of Mr and Mrs Leslie Touzalin. Attending were Mrs Ella Jenness Mrs John Hessler and Marshall Downey among others.
Plans are complete for the first smoker at the Veterans of Foreign Wars club rooms below Bogner's Automotive on Second Street in Henry Friday May 23. Committees have arranged free fish and other refreshments for the public. The event offers a first look at the remodeled VFW hall and a large crowd is expected.
The Swaney alumni banquet will be held Friday night May 30 at 7 30 o clock at Swaney High School. Reservations must be sent to Mrs Truman Combes McNabb a week before the event.
Mary Hauber daughter of Ben Hauber and Mrs Hauber ranks first in Henry High School ToC graduating class with a 96.8 average. She was in chorus four years Future Homemakers three years Library Club two years and on the school news staff two years as co editor senior year. She acted in class plays served on Student Affairs committee junior and senior years helped edit The Mallard and attended Girls State in 1946. She plans to enter the University of Illinois next year.
Evelyn Morris, daughter of Mrs. Minnie Morris, earns salutatorian honors at Henry High School with a 93.8 average. She excels in band and chorus, participates in library and F H A, and serves on the news staff. She led junior and senior plays, was vice president of the student affairs committee, and edited the Mallard yearbook. Plans college this fall.
Frank Halagieri plans to open a Royal Blue grocery store in Henry on Saturday May 31 with Halagieri in charge of the grocery department and Herbert Mattern as meat department manager. Halagieri formerly managed the A&P in Henry, which closed its store as part of a company plan to shrink in several cities. The Royal Blue store will occupy the former A&P building owned by Anna Wherry. Mattern, son of Mr and Mrs Ed Mattern, brings veteran meat trade experience from Kroger before the war.
American Legion Henry post No. 323 announces rapid development of its four day Fourth of July event from Thursday July to Sunday July 6. Commander Ed Brennan names committees and carnival attraction Mike Dressen of Chillicothe will bring his Dressen shows to Henry joining the Bunting shows. Fireworks planned Friday and Sunday with daily free acts and prizes. Farmers report persistent rain and flooding across Marshall and Putnam counties hindering field work. Plowing and oats were disrupted, delaying corn planting beyond the usual May 22 window, with only about ten percent sown this year. Some farmers note better results from June plantings, while observers log May rainfall totals at Henry.
LaRose Community High School schedules commencement for eight seniors led by valedictorian Barbara Schumacher and salutatorian Dale Burnell. Rev. L. H. The usual Memorial Day exercises will be held in Henry on Memorial Day this year. The Women's Relief Corps and American Legion co sponsor the event. Albert Barth, a Henry dealer, returned from Marion Indiana with a new Crosley. He delivered it to Edward Monser Jr. of Wenonga, accompanied by Addie Bickerman and Virgil Hoffman who helped on the trip.
Don Rickey, a local banjo player, will appear on the Morris B. Sachs Amateur Hour radio show on Sunday June 1 from 12 30 to 1 15 PM DST after passing a March 13 audition. Voted by mail or phone, contestants seek the big break. Rickey has played with Cotton Bailey and his Ozark Pals and previously with Roy Piran, now performing Fridays at Red Star Inn Bacon and Saturdays at Harmony Club in Wenorie.
Henry High School announces Baccalaureate services for the class of 1947 at 8:30 p m Sunday May 26 in the school gymnasium with Rev Ken Weth Nelson presiding and singing by the girls chorus. Principal address by Rev Fr Harold Holt. Commencement on Wednesday May 28 at 8:30 p m with Dr Joseph Clare Knox College giving the address The program includes music by the band and chorus, and awards are presented by Roy F Steele. Class colors yellow and green with the motto Build a day for Tomorrow.
A class of nineteen children, nine girls and ten boys, received their first Holy Communion during 8 o'clock Mass at St. Mary's. Rev. Fr. C. W. Clifford led the procession from the school, gifts included prayer books and rosaries, with a breakfast at the Tully home. Names of communicants listed.
The Ottawa deanery of the National Council of Catholic Women meets Sunday May 26 at St. Mary Church Ottawa at 2 p.m. Diocesan director Rev Fr James Garrahan and Ottawa president Mrs Harper speak with reports from deanery chairmen and discussions to follow. An electrical storm hit Henry Thursday afternoon striking an upper corner of the Henry Hotel. Bricks were knocked loose and fell onto the sidewalk. No injuries occurred and damage was not extensive.
Henry Grade School enrollment stands at 153 with three small country schools still open. Voters in Henry City Union Township and Whitefield Township will decide Saturday on consolidating grade schools to lower taxes, provide free transportation, and improve instruction at the Henry Grade School.
Captain Robert C. Jones, longtime Henry resident, returned on terminal leave ending July 11 after 22 months in the army with 19 overseas. His service included a medical unit in Pusan Korea and a cholera epidemic ward. He was separated from the Army May 15 at Camp Stoneman and plans to resume urology training in the East with his wife, who studied at Hunter College.
Prospects are improving for road paving on State routes near Sparland and Lacon with bids now likely to be awarded soon. Apparent low bids include Frenzel Brothers of Chicago at Sparland and Standard Paving Company of Chicago for 1.53 miles near the Lacono Country Club, while past bids were rejected as too high. Route 29 work at Sparland ties into a larger plan from Henry to Peoria, with bridges previously bid and a contract expected shortly. Orin Rowe visited his uncle Ed Rowe Friday.
