Marshall County Air Port Plans Land Purchase

The Marshall County Airport Commission has contracted to buy T45 acres from the Broaddus estate east of Lacon for airport conversion. County supervisors must approve the deal with Marshall County funds, price and terms to be reviewed soon. State and Federal funds will cover improvements including runways, with negotiations ongoing in Springfield and attendance by local officials.

Rites Tuesday For Mrs Mathis Father

Plans Completed for First VFW Smoker Friday Night

Evelyn Morris, daughter of Mrs. Minnie Morris, earns salutatorian honors at Henry High School with a 93.8 average. Frank Halagieri to Open Royal Blue Store in Henry

Frank Halagieri plans to open a Royal Blue grocery store in Henry on Saturday May 31 with Halagieri in charge of the grocery department and Herbert Mattern as meat department manager. Halagieri formerly managed the A&P in Henry, which closed its store as part of a company plan to shrink in several cities. The Royal Blue store will occupy the former A&P building owned by Anna Wherry. Mattern, son of Mr and Mrs Ed Mattern, brings veteran meat trade experience from Kroger before the war.

Don Rickey to Feature on Morris B Sachs Amateur Hour

Don Rickey, a local banjo player, will appear on the Morris B. Sachs Amateur Hour radio show on Sunday June 1 from 12 30 to 1 15 PM DST after passing a March 13 audition. An electrical storm hit Henry Thursday afternoon striking an upper corner of the Henry Hotel. Bricks were knocked loose and fell onto the sidewalk. No injuries occurred and damage was not extensive.

Henry Grade School Consolidation Aim Faces May Election

Captain Robert Jones Returns Home From Korea After 22 Months

Captain Robert C. Jones, longtime Henry resident, returned on terminal leave ending July 11 after 22 months in the army with 19 overseas. His service included a medical unit in Pusan Korea and a cholera epidemic ward. He was separated from the Army May 15 at Camp Stoneman and plans to resume urology training in the East with his wife, who studied at Hunter College.

Prospects Improve For Highway Work This Season

Prospects are improving for road paving on State routes near Sparland and Lacon with bids now likely to be awarded soon. Apparent low bids include Frenzel Brothers of Chicago at Sparland and Standard Paving Company of Chicago for 1.53 miles near the Lacono Country Club, while past bids were rejected as too high. Route 29 work at Sparland ties into a larger plan from Henry to Peoria, with bridges previously bid and a contract expected shortly. Orin Rowe visited his uncle Ed Rowe Friday.
